Hogges looking to clip high-flying Eagles' wings
Bermuda Hogges will be bolstered with the return of their national team contingent when they entertain bogey team Charlotte Eagles at the National Sports Centre (NSC) tomorrow.
The Hogges, who beat Western Mass Pioneers 3-1 last weekend, have been easily dispatched on the three occasions they have faced Eagles since joining the USL-D2 – the latest a 6-0 drubbing in the opening game of the season.
But with a dozen key players set to rejoin their ranks following their brave performances for Bermuda against Trinidad and Tobago in the World Cup qualifiers, coach Kyle Lightbourne is confident the Hogges can set the record straight.
"The Eagles have always beaten us easily. They out-played us on both occasions last season and put six past us at the start of the season," said Lightbourne. "We owe them a performance and I just hope the real Hogges turn up against them on this occasion."
Lightbourne faces a selection dilemma following the impressive displays of fringe players Jelani Scott, Darius Cox, Lashun Dill and Jared Peniston during the double header against Pioneers at BAA.
And with a number of their squad suffering from fatigue following their exertions with the national team, it's likely they will be keep possession of their first-team jerseys.
"We were very pleased with our players' performances against Pioneers. We should have drew the first game and deserved our victory in the second," said Lightbourne. "I've certainly got a selection headache now because it would be very difficult to drop some of the players after the way they performed.
"It's great to have a all of our players back as it's been a long time since we've had them all available. We haven't been working them too hard in training because they're all match fit already."
"A few of the guys have looked a bit leggy in training and we've got to be careful - quite a few are suffering from fatigue."
The Hogges have added North Village's midfield schemer Keith Jennings and PHC utility player Blenn Bean to their 2008 roster after the pair caught the eye during their recent trial.
"We always knew Keith could do a good job at this level," said Lightbourne. "He has a good range of passing. And Blenn gives us options as he can play a number of positions."
The Hogges take on Charlotte Eagles at the NSC tomorrow at 7 p.m.
n Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have extended their sponsorship deal with law firm Appleby which will see $45,000 invested into youth football during the 2008/09 season.
