Hollis can only get better says U-23 coach

Bermuda Under-23 winger Shayne Hollis (right) beats Trinidad's Jamal Clarence at the National Sports Centre, on Monday. Trinidad won the game 5-2, but Hollis earned high praise from coach Scott Morton for a pleasing performance

Bermuda Under-23 coach Scott Morton has urged impish winger Shayne Hollis to have more faith in his ability following his impressive performance against Trinidad.

Hollis was arguably Bermuda's most potent attacking threat against the Soca Warriors at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on Monday and scored the game's opening goal with a penalty he won after being hauled down in the box.

He continued to cause Trinidad's defence problems with his pace and trickery sporadically throughout the game and Morton believes the Hamilton Parish man will only improve by playing against top opposition.

"Shayne's a very explosive player when he wants to be," said Morton.

"He just needs to believe in himself more and that will come if he plays more matches against this calibre of opposition. He is going to be fine."

Morton said he was encouraged by his players' never-say-die spirit and expects an improved display from his team when they take on Trinidad at the NSC on New Year's Day.

"At times we wanted certain individuals to stay disciplined throughout the entire match, but these are the things we are trying to work through," said the ex-Dandy Town coach.

"My players never gave up and at times it was frustrating for them especially when they started conceding a lot of goals as that creates negative energy.

"But credit to them, we kept working and they tried not to get overly distracted by the scoreline.

"I expect a better performance on New Year's Day and I am looking forward to that."

Under-23 captain Seion Darrell believes Bermuda did not quite have enough time to prepare for their opening Trinidad clash.

"It was a little frustrating at times. We did not take our chances and we needed to be more confident on the ball and impact our style of play on them," said the Bermuda Hogges midfielder.

"There was not too much difference between the USL-D2 opposition the Under-23s played against last season and Trinidad.

"But in the summer we had more time to train and prepare. You have to remember a lot of our players have only just returned to the Island from college. If we had had another month to prepare for these games I think we would be on a whole different level."
