Hope you enjoyed the kids

I hope everyone who came out last weekend to watch the Invitational Youth Tournament had a good time. I know the weather wasn't the greatest but the kids from Bermuda, West Ham and St.-Etienne all really enjoyed it. I thought our boys did well since they were up against players who are hoping to go professional. Now they know where they have to get to in order to succeed. The tournament has been getting better and better over the years and in the future I would like to see a youth team from South Africa or perhaps Portugal come down.

Now on to the Big Leagues.

I must admit that the more I watch Wayne Rooney, the more I love him. We all knew he was a wonderful player right from when he scored that delightful goal for Everton against Arsenal when he was 16 years old. But he has matured so much.

And it is not just the goals he is scoring – and there are many – but it is everything about his game. Yes he does still get angry on the field but not nearly as bad as he got a few years ago. He got booked this week playing against AC Milan and he just smiled and let it go. A couple of years ago he may have remonstrated with the ref and got sent off.

He is a much more mature player now despite still being only 24 years old. He said at the beginning of the season that one of his goals was to win the Golden Boot and he certainly is going about it in the right way. He is playing more central now than he did when Ronaldo was at Manchester United and he scores a lot more inside the box – and with his head. In the match against AC Milan he scored two with headers for the 3-2 victory. In that game I also saw him chase back 70 yards to get a ball off an attacking Milan defender. You have to love that enthusiasm. I know England manager Capello and the England fans hope he continues with his form right through the World Cup.

United managed to come away with a victory at Milan and they have those crucial three away goals. But it could have been so different – especially in the first half. Milan could have scored three in the first half hour. That could come back to haunt the Italian team but they are a veteran side and will not be worried in the slightest by playing away at Old Trafford.

Some of the refereeing in this past week's Champions League matches was pretty awful.

Bayern Munich beat Fiorentina 2-1 in Germany but Bayern's second goal was so offside Stevie Wonder could have seen it.

It was a terrible decision to allow Klose's goal and the Italians have every right to be angry.

And in Portugal, Arsenal had a right to be upset when the referee allowed Porto to play a quick free kick. Wenger was fuming and rightly so. But he also should be angry at his backup goalkeeper. First the keeper fumbled a Porto cross and allowed it to go into his net and then he handled a back pass from Sol Campbell to set up the quickly taken free kick.

The keeper should have thrown the ball away instead of giving it to the ref who set it down for the free kick. He may have received a yellow card but it would have been worth it.

I know Campbell scored Arsenal's goal but to be honest I thought he was very slow – too slow for the Premier League anyway.

Another player who I think should consider hanging up his boots is former Arsenal great Patrick Vieira who now plays for Manchester City. He has looked very slow as well and was rightfully banned for a disgraceful tackle on a Stoke player on Tuesday.

Vieira kicked the guy right in the groin – that is the most polite way to put it.

Also last weekend saw things tighten up in Spain where Barcelona lost to Atletico Madrid so the gap is down to two points between Barca and Real Madrid.
