Hornets fightback to seal emotional win
Dandy Town coach Scott Morton dedicated his team's dramatic Dudley Eve final victory over Boulevard to Machai Campbell and then embraced the late defender's twin brother Michiko with an emotional hug.
Hornets' nail-biting penalty shootout win at Somerset Cricket Club last night was a fitting way to pay tribute to 19-year-old Campbell who lost his life in a road accident last week.
"We dedicate this Dudley Eve final victory to Machai and his family," said Morton.
"It's been a difficult time for everyone involved with the club and we've tried to offer a support system to Machai's family at this trying time. It's a wonderful feeling to win this trophy and very emotional."
The trophy had looked destined to be heading to St. John's Field with minutes remaining on the clock before Ajani Gibbons grabbed an equaliser with a spot-kick for Blazers to send the game into a penalty shootout.
Andrew Bascome's Blazers were reduced to ten man during the later stages of the second half when striker Angelo Simmons was dismissed by referee Alton Reid for foul and abusive language.
Hornets fell behind when young full-back Rieko Trott headed home a corner-kick early on and Blazers should have doubled their advantage when Dion Stovell dithered with just the keeper the beat and eventually saw his shot saved by Daniel Johnson.
Stovell was made to pay for his profligacy with Hornets marksman Raymond Beach equalising on the stroke of half time with a splendid finish.
Blazers had their fair share of chances to restore their lead in the second half with Stovell the chief culprit, but Hornets were starting to enjoy the lion's share of possession and edged ahead when Heys Wolfe fired home with a left-foot finish after good work from Nahki Wells down the right wing.
But Blazers refused to give in despite Simmons' sending off and continued to pose Hornets problems and looked to have gained the momentum when Ajani Gibbons scored from the spot after Ernest Signor was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.
An entertaining penalty shootout battle ensued until the unfortunate Chae Simmons saw his penalty saved by Johnson to hand Hornets an emotional cup final win.
Morton praised Boulevard's battling performance and said their opponents showed "unbelievable character" following Simmons' dismissal.
"The players have shown plenty of dedication, belief and commitment. We have some very talented individuals and we just been combine that talent into a team."
"Boulevard seemed to get stronger after the sending.
"They showed some unbelievable character and I have to give them full credit for their performance."
