Injury free Holder in search of a long run
Selfless striker Lloyd Holder is confident that the worst of his injury troubles are behind him and hopes for an extended run in the Bermuda Hogges team following his recent goalscoring exploits.
Holder has made a habit of leaping off the bench to score in recent weeks but now believes he deserves an opportunity to spearhead Hogges' attack against Richmond Kickers.
A niggling injury consigned Holder to the sidelines during the early part of the season but he made his first start in Hogges' win over Pittsburgh Riverhounds last weekend, replacing the suspended Antwan Russell, and insists he can be an impact player during Hogges' run-in.
"I think I've always given the team a boost when I've come on as a substitute this season and I'm blessed to have scored a couple of goals. Sometimes I don't think people realise how difficult it is to score at this level," said Holder.
"I've been injured for the most of the season and have been stuck on the sidelines which has been very frustrating – I've felt like a bit-part player. Hopefully I can start against Richmond and try and help the team pull off a victory."
Team ethic and a professional attitude have long been hallmarks of Holder's game with the popular marksman priding himself on his unconditional support for his team-mates.
And regardless of whether he keeps possession of his starter's jerseys or returns to the bench for Saturday's match against Kickers, rest assured Holder will respect coach Kyle Lightbourne's decision.
"I'm not the sort of player who complains when he doesn't play. I always look to help the team in what ever way can," he said. "If I'm on the bench I support the players who are on the pitch. It's important to remember that we only have a small pool of players to pick from and so it's vital that we all stick together and don't look to blame each other when things go wrong."
Holder believes should Hogges prevail against Kickers, a side they have never beaten, their confidence and swagger would soon return.
"We've had some bad experience against Kickers in the past and that should give us an incentive to beat them," he said. "Our confidence has been low recently but if we get our first away win I think you really will see our belief return."
Hogges take on Kickers on Saturday night at the University of Richmond Stadium.
