Island gymnasts ready to put on a show

National gymnastics coach Duke Nelligan (left) with his assistants Wendy Garrett, Chris Nelligan and Mandi Baughman. Tomorrow there will be an in-house competition at the National Gymnastics Association's gym at Southside.

Bermuda's top gymnasts will be in action this weekend when they compete in an in-house competition at their headquarters at the Southside Road Gymnasium in St. David's.

Head coach Duke Nelligan said: "The entire Bermuda gymnastics family has been working overtime to get this event together. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, coaches, and gymnasts came together to clean up the Base gymnasium and put together the meet.

"If this work continues, we will be able host international competitions at what could certainly be a premier training facility. We hope this meet brings more attention to the great work we are doing at the Southside facility."

The event is also a fundraiser for the national team who are raising money for new team track suits.

The competition, which starts at 1 p.m., comes on the back of a dynamic performance at the recent Annual Exhibition.

Some 18 gymnasts will be participating. Four gymnasts will perform in the "bronze" level – Trinity Wilson, Jadaizha Washington, Anah Lightbourne and Ava Marshall – while nine will compete in the higher "silver" level – Tomei Talbot, Sadia Wilson, Samantha Soares, Tais Burgess-Allen, Sydney Mason, Zantae Dill, Zekiah Wilson, Clara James, Danielle Wall and Andrea Burrows.

And in one level above that, Rosie Finnigan, Tabytha Hofheins, Morgan Cleave and Morgan Beckles will compete at the "platinum" level.

The Bermuda Gymnastics Association will also be welcoming Paul Spadaro, president of the United States Association of Independent Gymnastic Clubs (USAIGC) and his wife Mary Bakke, to the event this weekend. Bakke is a national gymnastics judge for USA Gymnastics and the national technical chair for the USAIGC.

Bakke will be judging the gymnasts at the competition as they try to qualify for the USAIGC National International Championships to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the end of June.

Spadaro will be here to assess Bermuda's potential as a future site for USAIGC international competitions.

Admission to the competition is free.
