Jones moves up the order
Malachi Jones will bat at six and Ryan Steede will play his first game for Bermuda since his return to the national set-up when their side take on Namibia in the Intercontinental Shield in Windhoek today.
Jones elevation up the batting order has allowed coach David Moore to pick an extra seamer, with Justin Pitcher getting the nod over Jordan DeSilva and the injured Jim West.
West damaged his shoulder in training at the beginning of the week, and it hasn't healed as quickly as the coaching staff had hoped.
The other player to miss out is Southampton Rangers batsman Shannon Rayner, who is touring with Bermuda for the first time at the senior level.
"At the moment it's just about the balance of the side, that would be the major reason. We were just looking for balance and we've come up with Jones batting at six, and that allows us to play an extra seamer," said Moore last night after informing the team of the selection.
DeSilva and Rayner were understandably disappointed at missing out, and Moore praised the attitude of all the players over the past week.
"Both of those guys (DeSilva and Rayner) are new to the senior set-up, and I would be disappointed if they weren't disappointed," said Moore.
"The reaction that I gauged from them was disappointment – they've worked very hard, the 14 people, including Jim with his injury, they've all worked very hard, during the time I've been over here which makes me very satisfied.
"Our preparation up until this point, with some of things that have gone before, are as good as they can be and we're ready to go."
Moore would have been happier if his side had already played a game, but Thursday's Twenty/20 match was washed out.
"I think with the washout of the Twenty20 game, we took advantage of that and got a practice in but it would have been nice to have an international under our belts," he said.
"But we had a meeting tonight and I think most people believe we have prepared as well as we possibly could have. We have left no stone unturned with our preparation and now it's up to the boys to see how they can go."
