Junior trio heading for top golf academy

Three of the Island's up and coming junior golfers will begin studies at the world renowned Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA) in South Carolina this summer.

Ryan Roberts (15), Joshua Hopwood (15) and Jordan Lamb (18), son of former Bermuda Regiment colonel Eddie Lamb, will enroll at the golf academy on a full-time basis in August.

During their time there they will be put through their paces by esteemed golf instructor Hank Haney who, for the past four years, has worked closely with current world number one Tiger Woods.

The Hank Haney IJGA advertises itself as offering the most comprehensive golf instruction in the world for junior golfers in grades five to 12 and claims it is the only organisation in the world that combines training, competition and academics for serious junior golfers.

The academy's full-time boarding programme offers the combination of golf instruction and academic studies designed to assist young men and women in achieving their potential as student-athletes.

Golfers from 23 countries across the globe enrol in the curriculum, with studies starting in late August and ending the following May, to participate in a unique training programme annually.

Upon arrival at the academy, students are assigned to a group based upon age and ability. The weekly schedule combines a variety of elements, including short-game and full-swing practice, putting, course management, video analysis as well as rounds of golf.

The juniors also participate in mental and physical training and are given a personalised practice programme that places emphasis on their strengths and weaknesses.

Additionally, each student is personally trained by Haney and his team of instructors on a daily basis with their progress monitored.

At the conclusion of each month, stats are reviewed and the practice plan revised to accelerate the learning process.

Since becoming involved with the IJGA in the summer of 2007, Haney has spent much of his time working with students and every instructor on his staff to develop what is now viewed by many as the number one junior golf academy in the world.

The 1999 National PGA Teacher of the Year has steadily built a sound reputation, instructing some 200 Tour pros from the PGA, LPGA, European, Japanese, and Asian tours and nearly five years ago joined the team that works with Woods.
