Kappa All-Star soccer was a joy to watch
I'm back in Bermuda for a couple of weeks working on ISL/Hope4Life business. As soon as I got off the plane I attended the Kappa Alpha Psi All Star game at the National Sports Centre on Saturday.
I must tell you that watching the young players in action was amazing and their skills and joy for the game was refreshing to see. I have heard about the tournament each year but never had a chance to come down and watch it due to my Baltimore Blast commitments.
I must say what struck me the most was the supporters in the stands as they were enjoying every moment and cheered each game. They were out in numbers and stayed to the very end.
As I was watching I found myself running up and down when players where scoring or doing something great, whether it was a pass, a defensive play or a goal, – the excitement of what was created by my young people was greatly appreciated.
I'm talking about under-seven, under-nine and under-11 girls and boys whose entertaining play had me celebrating goals as if I was watching my pro players at the Blast.
One memory I will never forget was a six-year-old sliding on his knees with both hands in the air out of joy when scoring his goal.
This week I want to talk about the need to acknowledgement and support young talent in Bermuda, from the classroom to the sports arena.
From media to fans and families, we must continue to highlight what our young people do, it's important that our support gets stronger and more consistent.
My young people need this,. They need to know that we are watching them and appreciate their accomplishments.
I saw in the paper that the Carifta team did an amazing job and I'm applauding them because I know what hard work they had to put in to make that happen.
I also saw in the paper an article on a young man who paints. He was just 13-years-old and was on the front page with the biggest smile and it really shows that Bermuda has talent.
I will make a point to try to get one of his paintings for my wall in Baltimore. I want to share his art with people that come by and be proud to let them know he is from my country.
I love it when young people complete their task and enjoy the feeling I get when hearing parents or friends talk about how talented their kids or friends are. The sparkle in their eyes when telling is priceless.
As I leave you, I want to encourage you all to continue to support and talk up our youngsters' accomplishments and do not wait for them to conquer the world before you praise them.
Try praising them on their efforts no matter how big or small. This will encourage them to sacrifice more and set higher goals for themselves.
To all my talented and hardworking young people I want to say thank you for your dedication and efforts you have put into your sports, school etc.
I wish you all the best in your next task.
Until Next time!
