Khano keen to explore Euro option
Khano Smith has revealed he has options overseas and will explore them if he can't agree new terms with New England Revolution when his current contract expires at the end of the MLS season.
The Bermuda international has held talks with his agent regarding his future and admits his ultimate ambition is to follow in the slipstream of Clyde Best and Shaun Goater and move his career to England.
Having had trials at clubs including League Two side Rochdale, Smith is familiar with the muck and bullets of English football, but hasn't narrowed his horizons and would be prepared to learn a foreign tongue and embrace a new culture if it meant gracing the European stage.
"I've also wanted to play in Europe," said Smith, who will miss today's game against Columbus Crew due to a hamstring injury. "I've got a UK passport and it's every Bermudian footballers dream to play professionally in England and I'm no different.
"I'd also like to learn another language whether it be Spanish, French or Italian and I'm pretty open minded about it all. My agent has got me some options if things don't work out (with the Revs)."
Since signing for coach Steve Nicol after impressing the ex-Liverpool defender during Revolution's pre-season sojourn to Bermuda in 2005, Smith has played in two successive MLS Cup finals and lifted the US Open Cup and SuperLiga trophy.
Attempts were made to re-negotiate Smith's Revolution contract last year but when both parties failed to thrash out a new deal it was decided to put talks on ice until November.
"It's true, my contract is up at the end of the season," said the 27-year-old.
"We tried to re-negotiate my contract last year but now we're putting things on hold until the end of the season. I'd dearly love to continue at the Revs but at the moment I'm just concentrating on winning the MLS Cup – that's my priority and everything else will have to wait."
The former Dandy Town forward yesterday praised current Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president Larry Mussenden ahead of his election battle with challenger Richard Calderon.
Smith said he believed Mussenden had done a "tremendous job" during his time in office and would have no complaints if he emerged triumphant at Monday night's Annual General Meeting.
"I think Larry has done a tremendous job and progress has been made during his time as president," said Smith. "We have the Government funding and we also have a new headquarters being built at Gym Field.
"I think it's important players take an interest in the BFA election race and I just want the best man for the job. I'll have no complaints if Larry is voted in but I'm sure Richard Calderon would also do a fine job for Bermudian football. He'll certainly have a tough act to follow."
