King and Smith on top form

Island athletes Arantxa King and Tyrone Smith booked their places in the Caribbean Games and the CAC Senior Championships with impressive performances over the weekend.

King, representing the Stanford University Cardinals in a Pacific 10 clash with rivals California Golden Bears, claimed the 'double' on Saturday when she won both the women's long and triple jump, firing her team to overall victory in the competition.

She leapt to victory in the triple jump with an effort of 12.88 metres beating out Artensia Young (12.54) of California by 34 centimetres. The Bermudian was two centimetres off her national record which she set in April at the Mountain Pacific Conference Indoor Championships.

King then confirmed her spot in the summer championships by jumping 6.47 metres in the long jump, outdistancing fellow Cardinal Sarah Matthew (6.16) by 31 centimetres.

The Cardinals also claimed the 'double' over the Bears with the women (92) beating California (71) by 21 points, and the men (83) edging out their opponents (80) by three points.

Smith, competing in the Grand Prix IAAF de Dakar in Senegal, placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 7.79 metres, thus gaining entry into both big meets as well.

Ndiss Kaba Badji of Senegal won the event with a leap of 8.29 metres. Yahya Berrabah of Morocco (8.01) and Gable Garenamotse of Botswana (7.89) were second and third respectively. Smith and Mamadou Gueye (7.72) of Senegal rounded out the top five.

Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson was pleased with the two athletes' performances and said she wanted more to follow in their footsteps.

"I am really pleased to see how Aranxta and Tyrone are performing right off the heels of the Carifta Games success," said Watson. "I know that Aranxta and Tyrone's main goals for this year ares to qualify for the World Championships in Berlin later in the summer.

"We have so many athletes that have already qualified for several international track meets coming up in the summer – World Youth Championships, Junior Pan-Am Games, CAC Senior Championships, Caribbean Games – but we haven't had any of them reach the standards for World Championships.

"I am positive that Aranxta and Tyrone will reach these standards with the level of competition that they have ahead of them."
