Kings kick-start ISL title defence

New boy Chris Furbert led from the front as defending Island Soccer League (ISL) champions Kings kicked off the season with a 4-3 victory over Arsenal.

Furbert, who is starting his first (ISL) season, scored a brace to lead the Kings to a 4-3 win on Monday night at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Early in the first quarter Arsenal were awarded a penalty, but Cymande Davis stretched to save Travis Wilkinson's spot kick.

Ricky Saltus produced some brilliant footwork to baffle the Arsenal defenders and opened the scoring for the Kings in the dying minutes of the first quarter.

Aquino Grant then popped up to slot home the Kings second.

Midway through the second-half Furbert made it 3-0 with the match seemingly all but over.

Yet Arsenal's Dwyia Blyden pulled a goal back in the third quarter after a quickly-taken free kick by Wilkinson.

Furbert then scored his second goal to make it 4-1, but Blyden reduced the deficit for Arsenal one minute later. Reggie Lowe breathed life back into Arsenal's chances by notching again.

Blyden had a chance to equalise with a one-on-one with the keeper, but he took too long to shoot.

"We are defending champions and with that comes a lot of pressure," said Kings coach Marvin Belboda. "If teams beat us they feel they are the champions.

"From the get-go, I instructed them to attack and stamp their authority on the match.

"I told my players that the play-offs is the main concern and from there anything can happen.

"We have a good structure, with good defenders and a lot of quality attacking options so we should be ok going forward."

Two-goal Furbert said although the pace of the game was different, once his team become familiar with each other they would become a formidable force.

"This is my first time playing this form of the game, it is a little faster than normal," said Furbert. "We have to stay together and work for one another, and basically have to cover each other's back.

"Like coach Belboda said we are only as strong as our weakest link, and all our players must come together and stay strong throughout the season.

"Every one will make mistakes in this type of game, so we have to keep encouraging each other."

The second match of the season's opener saw the Union defeat the Royal 2-0, with two goals from Rohan Simons,

Knights lost 6-5 in a thrilling overtime game to Apex at the NSC on Tuesday night.

The Knights squandered a two-goal lead and eventually fell in sudden-death extra-time.

Keston Lewis scored a hat-trick for Apex while Vernon Tankard, captain Kori Goddard and Hobte Burrows all chipped in with a goal apiece.

Kayia Darrell found the back of the net twice for the Knights, and was assisted by Phil Anderson, Vincent Minors and Raymond Beach, who all found the net.

Earlier in the evening Titans defeated the Storm 7-4 with two goals each from Takeyhi Walker and Mark Steede, while Damon Francis, Anthony Rocker and Tarik Jennings were also on target.

Antoine Russell scored the season's first hat-trick for the Storm, while Kevin Lambe added the other.

The next round of ISL fixtures are on June 23 and 24 at the NSC.
