yesterday captured the St. David's Lighthouse Trophy as first boat overall on corrected time.

Weaver, and his fellow midshipmen from Annapolis, crossed the finish line shortly after 9 a.m. yesterday, and as the hours passed they realised that overall victory was theirs.

Constellation's impressive performance saw her capture Class C honours and overtake Class A leader Bully for the overall crown.

First-to-finish yacht Boomerang was overhauled by five of her Class A rivals and had dropped to 35th overall yesterday evening.

Freestyle -- a Little Harbor 52 -- clinched the Royal Mail Trophy as the overall winner in the Cruising Division when she sailed in well ahead of Moonracer , and Eldon Trimingham's Escape .

But it was the crew of the Concordia 46 Dancer that shared the limelight yesterday when they went into the record books as the first-ever all-female crew to complete a Newport to Bermuda Race.

Led by skipper Nance Frank, the crew is in training to become the first team of American women to compete in the 1993 Whitbread Round the World Race -- a 33,000-mile marathon considered to be the Mount Everest of sailing.

Frank skippered the 33-foot Farrocious in the 1990 Newport to Bermuda Race when she was the only female helmsman in the 156-boat fleet.

Crew member Linda Stearn was the only other woman on board to have sailed Newport to Bermuda. She was the first woman to undertake the 635-mile voyage back in 1976.

Some of the crew have very litte sailing experience, like cook Sandra Welsh and Carol Peppin -- a reporter for USA Today .

However, the remainder of the 13-strong crew -- first mate Vicky Lea, second mate Laura Kirby, Barbara Span, Diana Klybert, Leah Newbold, Carolyn White, Susan Chiu, Linda Lindquist and Debbie Dempsey -- have thousands of ocean miles under their belts.

"It was terrific,'' said Frank after arriving at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club yesterday. "I'm bursting with pride at how well everybody did.'' They sailed across the line third in Class B -- and finished seventh in their class on corrected time.

Frank, who assumed the role of both captain and navigator for the 635-mile race, has over 100,000 ocean miles to her credit.

And despite the torrential rain, which greeted her arrival yesterday, she said, "We're so glad to be here in Bermuda.'' OVERALL WINNER -- Constellation crosses the finish line off St. David's Lighthouse yesterday morning to claim corrected time honours.
