Legends of sport should not be forgotten

I must apologise first of all for not having a column posted over the past few weeks. I have been tied down with travelling with the team and champions4champions (C4C) legends of sports.

First let me update you about the Baltimore Blast. We have dropped many games and are now sitting three games below league leaders Monterrey LaRaza.

We have not been playing well and need to get things back on track fast.

We are just getting back from Mexico whre we lost 25-10.

Changes may be in the making unless we turn this around fast and we play at home and away this weekend.

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of being part of the NFL charity events at the Super Bowl in Miami with champions4champions legends of sports. Champions4champions is a group of sports legends I am part of that travel around to major events and community programmes helping young people.

I have been a part of champions4champions for the last six months and it has been a great experience – learning about the different pro sports, pro athletes and pro coaches.

I had the chance to talk to a couple of NFL coaches and players, but what I enjoyed most was talking to the legends of the NFL.

I had a chat with Dornal Woolford from the Chicago Bears, Ed "Too Tall" Jones from the Dallas Cowboys and many others. We discussed the young athlete of today and how things are just not the same.

Financial to media, the athlete today has plenty to play for but needs to be more aware of leaving a great legacy behind rather than just getting paid.

We even chatted about how pro athletes end up with nothing by making the wrong decisions with their money and not thinking long-term, and how many of them are sitting around waiting for that big pay day instead of making the most of what they have.

The one conversation that struck me the most and will be a great help to my vision for Island Soccer League (ISL) and Hope4Life was the one I had with Mike Cline, one of the head guys at Fantasy Sports Entertainment (FSE).

Mike is involved with the NFL and has been working with NFL charities for a while.

Mike and I were chatting about how FSE has been finding ways to bring back the legends from all sports through Fantasy Sports Entertainment.

His company felt it was important because of what the legends have brought to the game.

We talked of ways to help build a programme which would help do the same for Bermuda.

I explained to him that this was of great importance to me because most young athletes have no idea who laid the paths out before them.

There are plenty of legends in Bermuda from all sports who have not been recognised enough for their achievements, so reviving their legacy would help revive our sports in Bermuda a great deal.

At the NFL charities, one of the events was a golf event at Dural course.

I play golf but there was no way I was planning on hacking up one of the best golf courses of the PGA!

I just drove around in the golf cart with coach Hatcher (Dominic Wilkins' father) and got to chuckle at Ed "Too Tall", Laurence Taylor and company.

Watching the players be competitive in a sport outside their own was interesting to say the least. The event was great and it was also great to see many of the legends of the NFL and other sports giving something back.

The next event for C4C will be the NBA All-Star game in Dallas. I will keep you posted.

Until next time!
