Lightbourne considers national job

Kyle Lightbourne

Former English pro Kyle Lightbourne has considered applying for the vacated job as Bermuda's national football coach, The Royal Gazette can confirm.

It is understood that Lightbourne, who guided PHC Zebras to Martonmere Cup, FA Cup and Premier Division glory last season, recently held candid discussions with Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical director Derek Broadley who hinted earlier this month that the ex-Coventry City striker would be considered for the post if he made himself available.

Lightbourne has already completed a stint as Bermuda's national coach, leading the Gombey Warriors to the second round of the 2006 Digicel Cup, to date the Island's best showing in the regional competition.

When reached yesterday, Lightbourne held his cards close to his chest.

"To be honest I have given it (coaching job) thought and I am aware that the deadline is tomorrow (today)," he said. "But as of yet I haven't made a final decision or submitted any application.

"I've spoken to a couple of people about the job, and I will make a decision prior to the deadline."

Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether or not Lightbourne's Bermuda Hogges' colleague Shaun Goater, Boulevard coach Andrew Bascome or ex-Bermuda coach Kenny Thompson have shown any interest in the job.

Thompson's third stint as national coach ended on a bitter note late last month when Bermuda failed to advance past the preliminary group stage of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in the Cayman Islands.

Bascome and close friend Goater have expressed interests in the past of being involved in some capacity at the national level.
