Logie urges fans to have some patience
National coach Gus Logie wants Bermuda's supporters to change the habit of a lifetime and have some patience with his young side in their Intercontinental Cup clash with Scotland which gets under way today at the National Sports Centre.
Expectations have risen dramatically since the team surprisingly beat Canada in both the one-day series and Intercontinental Cup.
And while patience is not something that is normally associated with the average cricket fan in Bermuda, that's exactly what will be required when the first four-day game to be played on the Island for several years begins this morning.
The approach to this form of cricket differs greatly to the crash-bang-wallop of the limited overs game, and already under pressure to perform having beaten Canada, Logie wants his players to ignore the fans and simply concentrate on playing their own game, something he is confident his side can do.
"The expectations from the outside is something that we don't have any control over," said Logie.
"What people say and think, that's out of our hands, we can only control what we do, and we just want the players to focus on the moment.
"I think they were under some pressure in Canada and they came through. Home pressure is a different thing and the expectation of supporters is an added pressure.
"Some players prefer to play away where they can focus and there are fewer distractions. At home they have the fans calling out to them 'hit the ball, hit the ball', when they should be blocking it, so obviously that's an issue.
"I think they all need to understand that the team comes first, and what the team needs is the most important thing, and we've talked to the players about what they need to do to continue developing.
"The best time to go into any game is after a win. I trust that our confidence is measured and that we understand that we have to continue doing what we are doing and working together as a team.
"There are going to be difficult times, there's no two ways about it. In a four-day game anything can happen, but I'm confident in the way the guys are playing at the moment, and that they will perform well together as a team."
While outside expectations may focus on the younger members of the squad, Logie just wants his side to do the best that they can.
"At this point in time we aren't putting any kind of pressure on the younger players in terms of expectations," he added. "I think naturally you want to do well for yourself and that's about it. At the end of the day if you want to be the best that you can be, and do the best that you can do, then we are going to be satisfied with that, that's all we ask of a player.
"Some players are developing and if a guy's best is a 50, then we can't ask him for 100. The ultimate goal is to develop, but at this moment in time if the best is 50, I'm going to take 50."
