Malachi defies Moore's orders
Bermuda international Malachi Jones is heading for a run-in with head coach David Moore after playing for Willow Cuts yesterday, despite being specifically told he was not to do so.
Jones opened the bowling for Cuts in their match with Bailey's Bay while the rest of Bermuda's 14-man squad were meeting at Horseshoe Bay for a light training session.
And the fast bowler is likely to be punished today by Moore for defying his orders, with the Australian already proving his is not afraid to discipline players who step out of line. Jordan DeSilva was dropped for being late to Friday's ICC Americas Championship opener against Bahamas.
"I am aware of the situation, and the players were told that they weren't to be playing on Sunday," said Moore, "and the clubs were also notified via e-mail that national players weren't to play . . . apart from Shannon Rayner, who was given permission to play (for Southampton Rangers).
"I will deal with it as soon as possible. I was very surprised to hear that he played because at no time did he mention to me that he intended to play."
In contrast, Rayner, who has yet to take part in the ICC Americas Championship, was allowed to play for Rangers as Mooore was keen for the batsman to get some much-needed time at the crease. And Rayner grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring 50 in his side's win over Somerset, in front of Moore and skipper David Hemp.
"On a positive note, Rayner's been very good," said Moore. "Not only did he bat really well, he also fielded exceptionally well, very, very well. He is giving every indication that he desperately wants to play for Bermuda."
