Marshall lies sixth

Classic in South Carolina yesterday when her seven-over-par 79 left her five strokes out of first place.

The low score of the day was turned in by Shauna Estes of Orangeburg, South Carolina, who shot a 74 to lead Dina Taylor of Debary, Florida by one stroke.

Defending champion Kim Little of Temple Terrace, Florida, shares third place on 76 with two other players, Jennifer Hermsen of Lewisville, North Carolina, and Rheba Mabie of Marshfield, Wisconsin.

Said Marshall of her opening round: "I could have hit the ball better. I gave away a lot of shots. I hit the ball well off the tee but my putting was so-so.

"I was leaving the ball short a lot. It was raining before I got here and the fairway grass is long and wet. The greens are playing like at home.'' Marshall will be aiming to close in on the leaders in today's second round.

She placed fifth in this tournament last year.

Chris York, Will Garner and Daniel Brawley share the lead in the boys 15-18 division on 72 while Sal Spallone leads by five strokes in the 13-14 category following his 70.

The girls play over 5,728 yards, the 13-14 boys 6,277 and the 15-18 boys 6,714.
