Minors nails colours to Somerset's mast

Heading West: ,/B>Landro Minors has pledged his allegiance to Cup Match challengers Somerset.

Landro Minors, one of the Island's most in form batsmen at the moment, has decided to follow in the footsteps of St.David's' team-mates Del Hollis, Sammy Robinson and Chris Douglas by heading West to Cup Match challengers Somerset Cricket Club.

The early order batsman trained with the West Enders earlier this week and has been named in the Vice-President's XI that will take on the President's XI in Saturday's final trial match at Somerset Cricket Club.

Minors has also been named in the St.George's Vice-President XI but according to club sources has already informed the champions that he has decided instead to try his luck at the opposite end of the Island where his chances of breaking into the Cup Match scene may be better.

The technically sound left-handed batsman scored an unbeaten 128 and 66 playing for the Islanders last weekend to serve notice that he is coming into top form with the Cup Match classic just a week away.

Somerset have not beaten St.George's in the East End since 1981 but their chances of doing so this year may have been enhanced with Minors' late arrival at the club.

"I think Landro's arrival is a big bonus for us because he has the ability to consolidate and change gears if need be. He will definitely be an asset to us," commented Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson.

Should Minors be named in Somerset's squad this year his inclusion could bolster a top order that already contains the likes of senior national team pair Stephen Outerbridge and Chris Douglas as well as the explosive Dion Stovell who is also a useful off spinner.

Robinson added: "Landro showed up for training and hopefully he can put on a good performance during Saturday's final trial match. He's in some good form and the selectors are definitely going to have a good look at him."

The Somerset skipper is confident his team can break their East End jinx and regain the cup they surrendered at Wellington Oval three years ago during a controversial low-scoring affair that saw tempers boil over.

"We have so much talent at Somerset this year that I think our biggest challenge is going to be picking the final eleven - everybody is fighting for a spot," Robinson said.

In a recent interview with this newspaper Minors, stated: "Both teams want to have a good look at me. And whichever wants me first, that's where I will go.

"I feel I still have a lot of time left in the game and I want to take my career to the next level."

Lionel Cann, the St.George's skipper, admitted he would have prefered that Minors remained in the East End where he took part in a recent trial match cut short due to a hazardous pitch.

"We'd obviously love to have him (Minors) stay in the East but he may feel he has a better chance to get in their (Somerset's) side," Cann wrote in his Bermuda Sun column.

Along with St.David' skipper, Delyone Borden, Minors added 214 runs in an unbroken fifth wicket stand that laid the foundation for the Islanders' successful Eastern Counties defence against challengers Cleveland County at Sea Breeze Oval last weekend.

"Landro Minors' unbeaten century on Saturday (Eastern Counties) was no surprise to me. He's been showing that kind of promise for some time now and he has put himself in the frame for Cup Match," added Cann, who will stand down as St.George's' captain after next week's two-day match.

Meanwhile, this year will mark Robinson's first year captaining Somerset away from home and the 24-year old all-rounder is confident he can rise to meet the challenges that lay ahead.

"I definitely feel that I will be up for the task and I have been receiving good advice from past Somerset captains Joe Bailey and John Tucker who have given me some insight on what to expect and how to approach certain situations," he said.

"I am going to take all the information I can and use it to my advantage. I actually enjoy playing Cup Match in St.George's and as a captain I would really love to win down there."

Robinson has also vowed to attack champions St.George's from the first ball.

"We have to attack; there's just no other way," he said. "If we want to win this cup we have to fight for it and everybody has to come together to do it."
