Motocross riders face new-track challenge

Local motocross riders will get another crack at conquering the revamped Southside track tomorrow as the season's second race-day takes centre stage.

The course, which was originally a mix of both moto and supercross tracks, is now solely a motocross-style course and is expected to add some new twists to the campaign.

Although many competitors experienced the track in the season-opener, it remains anyone's guess as who will challenge for overall honours.

Bermuda Motocross Club (BMC) president Gannon Trott said the new course enabled riders to test themselves and would make many of the categories more competitive.

"The first race-day was perfect," said Trott. "There weren't any incidents or anything of that nature, and the track was well groomed.

"Everyone was excited because we have a new challenge in the design of the track. So we had a good day.

"We have more of a motocross track this year. In previous years we have had a mix of motocross and supercross.

"Now we have gone strictly to motocross which deals more with speed. There are new jumps such as a different finish line jump and a new rhythm section, just to name a few changes."

Each class will run three races, with each race carrying points towards the standings. And with this format designed to get the most out of each moto, no rider will be able take any race lightly, knowing that championship aspirations can disappear as quick as they arrived.

However, Trott said trophies were not the most important objective, the president expressing his desire to take riders abroad to compete against unfamiliar riders, gaining valuable experience in the process.

"We have roughly 85 to 90 riders in seven categories, which isn't far off what we had last year," Trott continued.

"Each class does three motos and points are totalled after each race.

"First and foremost, we would like to have a safe season. We also want to develop the younger riders, to make them more skilful.

"It is also vital to gain experience.

"Our biggest venture this season is to get a team of riders to go away and compete in an amateur national.

"These are our main focuses for the year and we all want to work hard and achieve what we set out to do."

Motorcross racing tomorrow starts at 12 noon at the Southside track.
