Mourinho and Inter reach promised land

I have said all season long that if you are going to be successful against Barcelona you have to deny them space. And Inter Milan gave a masterclass of that this week when they managed to get into the final of the Champions League after a nail-biting night in Nou Camp.

Jose Mourinho's men won the tie 3-2 on aggregate after only giving up one goal in the second leg in Spain ¿ and that was playing with 10 men for most of the match after Motta was sent off.

Mourinho had a plan and his players carried it out to the letter. Even though Barca had more than 80 percent of the possession, Inter's players played so smart and didn't over expose themselves. They didn't give Barca's wonderful players any space for most of the night. Love or hate him, Mourinho did a fantastic job. He really is the Special One and I take my hat off to him.

Now Inter have the chance to win their first European final in 45 years when they take on Bayern Munich later this month.

Barcelona tried time and again to get past the Inter defence but the Italian team stuck to their job ¿ and that is tough to do for a whole match especially with the likes of Messi coming at you constantly.

I also have to praise Inter's goalkeeper Julio Cesar who pulled off a magnificent save after Messi shot for goal earlier in the match.

Barca did have some chances and should have scored when Messi made an excellent cross only to see substitute Bojan Krkic head the ball wide. All he had to do was head it straight down and perhaps we would be talking about Barca being in the final.

Pique managed to get the ball into the net near the end and then the Spanish giants managed to score again but the ref ruled for a handball.

Inter have always been strong in Serie A dominating for a while but it is the Champions League trophy that their fans really want. Now they have that chance.

Mourinho and Inter also have the chance to do what Barca did last year ¿ win the treble. They lead Roma in the league and are also in the Italian Cup final.

I was hoping to see an English team in the Champions League final but it was not to be. They certainly had enough clubs in the mix but this year failed to make the grade. We will have to see what happens next season but I think Inter against Bayern should be a good game. They are both physical teams.

Looking ahead to this weekend's action in England, Chelsea can wrap it up if they beat Liverpool and Manchester United lose to Sunderland.

And after watching Chelsea take apart Stoke last weekend I have to put my money on the Blues coming away with all three points at Anfield. They absolutely destroyed Stoke 7-0. And United may not have it easy against Sunderland who have them a good game earlier in the season. Sunderland's striker Darrent Bent has been on fire and I believe he deserves a chance with the England team.

I was so happy when my boys West Ham beat Wigan 3-2 last weekend which has seen us to safety. Scott Parker was superb. His goal was tremendous but it is what he does throughout the game that really impresses me. He reminds me of Billy Bonds who I played with in my time with the Hammers. Bonds was a never-say-die character and Parker is like that ¿ he gives it his all and leaves everything on the field. We need more players like that. I hope Zola stays on as manager and I hope the owners go and spend some money. We need to replace the American defender Jonathan Spector. He tries hard but I don't think he is good enough. He makes too many mistakes back there and they can be costly. We also need some help in midfield and another striker ¿ someone who is a seasoned pro and gives us 20-25 goals a season.

Another good match this weekend should be Spurs taking on Aston Villa. They are both on 64 points and Manchester City are one point behind with Liverpool on 62 points. All of those clubs are desperately trying to land that fourth league spot for the Champions League but my feeling is that it may come down to when City host Spurs on Wednesday.
