Mussenden proud of achievements

Larry Mussenden

Larry Mussenden remained gracious in defeat after suffering a heavy loss in last night's Bermuda Football Association elections and insisted he was proud of his achievements during his seven-year stint as president.

Mussenden said the soon-to-be completed $1.5 million training headquarters at Gym Field would be the major legacy from his time in office and was pleased to hand over the reins with the association in such a healthy financial position.

"I'd like to give my congratulations to the new president and I wish him all the best for the future," said the former Attorney General, who first took over as BFA president in 2001 following Neville Tyrrell's resignation.

"Despite the result I'm truly ecstatic and happy with all that I've achieved over the past seven years.

"There's no election result that can take away my feelings of happiness because I leave the association financially sound with the $15 million Government funding and with the BFA's first headquarters at Gym Field on the way.

"I'd like to thank the affiliates for their support during my time as president and I wish them all the best for the future."

Mussenden clung on for re-election in 2004 when he pipped Mark Trott to the post by a single vote.

n Wolves president Hewvonnie Browne was one of the surprise packages last night as he was named on the executive council for the first time joining the so-called big club representatives in the association's hierarchy.

With a new president elected, Browne said he was confident the new administration would prove successful.

"The election went smoothly," Browne said. "The new executives along with the Calderon brothers worked hard with the clubs and gave them their new outlook on how things would go if they got in and in the end it paid off."

Coming from a so-called smaller club, Browne said his job would not be to help other smaller clubs, but to do what was necessary to help move football forward. "My part of the puzzle is to be consistent and loyal to the development of the sport and allow Bermuda football get back to what it once was," he said.

"In my eyes there is no such thing as a big club or minnow on the Island because at the end of the day we are all affiliates. I was overwhelmed as I looked at the executives who were being named.

"I saw a lot of people that can all come together and work as a cohesive unit. From Stephen Proctor to Lee Holder, we have assembled a team that can move forward and progress.

"Nothing is definite in life but I will say that the new committee will put a whole hearted effort into this and remain consistent. That is the key."
