New category for Kappa's popular youth tournament
Local fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, are adding a new age category to their tenth annual Pee Wee football tournament to be held at the National Sports Centre (NSC) this weekend.
Girls' under-14s will be added to the already established groups, which include under sevens, under-nines and under-11s.
The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Kappa member Jamal Hart says the organisation want to give back to the community and assist the youth with the proper guidance, whether it's on or off the pitch.
The fraternity received a Sports Citation Award at the this year's Annual Sports Awards at City Hall, where almost all of the members turned up in their traditional red blazers.
The citation, Hart believes, is a testament to their ongoing dedication to the youth of Bermuda.
"We are the proud recipients of the Sport Citation Award this year for our outstanding work with the community," said Hart.
"The Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi were extremely proud to be recognised for our 10 years of community service through the sport of youth football.
"It was truly a very proud moment for all of us and we look forward to continuing to give back to our community.
"To put on this non-profit event as successfully as we have done so over the years takes a lot of hard work and dedication.
"Having said that it is truly a team effort and Mr. Troy Harvey has to be recognised as the founding father of this event.
"Through his vision this event has continued to prosper and grow."
The girls' category will be comprised of teams from Bermuda High School for Girls (BHS), Young Stars, Somerset Cricket Club, PHC and Young Men's Social Club (YMSC).
Also, the fraternity will be reinforcing their commitment to drug-free sports by having the Island Soccer League (ISL) PRIDE bus on site to educate and entertain the hundreds of spectators who are expected to attend the event.
"It's fundamentally important that the youth are educated at a young age about the dangers that drugs can cause whether they be recreational or enhancement.
"So over all the day is about fun, competition and education with the winners being the youth."
Somerset Trojans will be back to defend their under-seven and under-nine titles, while also trying to go one better in the under-11 category where North Village beat the West Enders to deny them carrying all three trophies back home last year.
