No-nonsense coach ready to take charge

Bermuda's national cricketers have been told that their new coach is a strict disciplinarian who will throw them out of the squad if they even step slightly out of line.

The warning came from Arnold Manders, Bermuda Cricket Board's Director of Cricket Development, as he announced a 32-man squad for the Island's international fixtures in 2010.

And new coach David Moore, who has yet to be officially confirmed in the role, has been heavily involved in deciding who will make the squad for the Intercontinental Shield matches against Namibia and UAE in April and July, and the ICC Americas Tournament in May and June.

David Hemp will once again captain a squad that includes Stephen Outerbridge as vice-captain, and recalls the likes of Delyone Borden, Kyle Hodsoll, Jacobi Robinson, Ryan Steede, and Janeiro Tucker, who is recovering from knee surgery and won't be available until April.

The likes of Borden and Robinson have had disciplinary problems in the recent past, and their return will spell a second chance under a new coach. However, Manders revealed that any future indiscretions were likely to be met with a stern response.

"We have had quite a few (players) that we have had problems with (in the past)", said Manders. "But we have put them in, and will let the new coach deal with them. And then if they don't tie in with what we want them to do then they'll be dismissed from the programme.

"I've spent a lot of time with him and he's a strict disciplinarian. I don't think he's going to take any nonsense. So if they are going to mickey mouse around he'll just dismiss them from the programme, I'm quite sure of that."

Of the 32 players in the squad, only Glenn Blakeney's name is conspicuous by its absence, but Manders said that the door was always open for the batsman to return.

"He (Blakeney) has some health issues that he needs to deal with, but I'm sure if he gets healthy the coach may well get him in," said Manders. "I can't say that for sure, but I know now that he has some issues that he has to take care of."

While Moore is yet to see his new charges play, he has been in constant contact with the Board in recent weeks, and will continue to do so until his appointment is officially confirmed.

One of his next tasks is likely to be to trim the squad from its present size to a more managable 15 players, who will form the team to travel to South Africa and Namibia at the end of March.

"The new coach has already been involved in the process," said Manders. "I just spoke to him last week, and myself and the other coaches who are with the squad are keeping him abreast of what is going on. He is pleased with what we have planned until he gets here, so we are ok.

"He's quite happy with it (the squad), he's seen it, he's looked at all the stats and I'm sure if anyone needs to be added to it when he gets here, and he sees them play, I'm sure he'll add to it."

When Moore gets here is another matter. The Australian is reportedly waiting to have his appointment approved by the Department of Immigration, and is believed to be reluctant to leave his current position at the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide until the situation is resolved.

"When he gets here, that is the question, that's why we need to get the squad out because I'm tired of calling 32 players every time we have a training session and have a meeting," said Manders.

"I don't think he'll be here any time soon."
