No question about it: Mourinho is special!

News that Jose Mourinho will be taking over at Real Madrid came as no surprise this week. After all, Mourinho said as much after his side, Inter Milan, won the Champions League last weekend against Bayern Munich in Madrid.

After all what else does Mourinho have to prove with Inter – he has won everything with the club, the Serie title, the Italian Cup and now the Champions League. Personally I think Mourinho is at the top of the ladder when it comes to coaching and without a doubt he is the best defensive manager in the world. He learned under great managers like Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal when they were at Barcelona. All I can say is that any young manager coming up should study what Mourinho does.

The 'Special One' seems like the kind of fellow who is always looking for a new challenge and that is great. He has nothing to stay for in Italy – and face it, he has said that he doesn't like coaching in Italy but does love Inter. There is nothing else for him to do in Italy.

Now he has won league titles in his native Portugal with Porto, in England with Chelsea and now with Inter. He also won the UEFA Cup and Champions League with Porto and so becomes one of the select few managers to win the Champions League with clubs in two different countries.

He has been the best coach this season and his players all believe in him and his system.

I admire what he has done with Cameroon striker Eto'o who he brought in from Barcelona. Eto'o this season has done a lot of tracking back to help the team with no complaints whereas at Barca he was basically an out and out striker. When you have you forwards tracking back like that, it makes it easier for the whole team and Mourinho does like to counter attack. He sets up his team defensively better than anyone.

In the final I thought Argentine striker Diego Milito was simply superb. He scored both goals which were excellent. He is the type of striker who, if you give him half a chance, will score.

Milito has been instrumental in Inter winning the treble this season.

Besides scoring both goals against Bayern last weekend, he also scored the only goal in Inter's victory over Roma in the final of the Italian Cup earlier this month and then it was his lone strike which secured Inter's 18th league title when they beat Siena 1–0 in the final match of the season.

I did think that Bayern had their chances, particularly right after the restart when Mueller saw his shot saved by Julio Cesar. Mueller is still a young player and perhaps if he had more experience he would have chipped the keeper who went to ground very early.

I thought Bayern's Arjen Robben was excellent and it was a pity that Bayern's other players could not put the effort in that he did.

Having said that, much of the problems the German champions had was down to Inter's play – especially defensively.

Blackpool must have been a sight to see last weekend after the seaside town's team managed to gain promotion to the Premier League. It certainly has been decades in coming. They are one of England's most historic clubs and I am so pleased for them.

They twice came from a goal behind to beat Cardiff 3-2 in the play-off final and now join Newcastle and West Brom in going up to the top flight.

I was particularly impressed with Blackpool's Charlie Adam who struck with a curling free kick – it was as good of a free kick as you would see anywhere in the world.

And fair play to their manager, Ian Holloway, who has done a magnificent job leading the team this season and making believers out of his players.

The last time Blackpool were in the top flight was back in 1971 – and I remember playing against them!

They are only a small club and will have to bring in reinforcements if they want to stay up and that could be difficult for them. Many times teams like Blackpool get promoted and then go straight back down. The other two promoted clubs, Newcastle and West Brom, have much experience in the Premier League although West Brom do seem to go up and down regularly.

Next week I am going to start looking at the World Cup. Don't forget, it all kicks off on June 11!
