Now let's win first title, says St.David's president Lugo

Newly promoted St.David's will not be popping any champagne corks unless they secure their maiden First Division title, president Aaron Lugo insisted yesterday.

A draw against Young Men's Social Club at Lords on Sunday would be enough to ensure St. David's finish ahead of East End rivals St.George's, who also gained promotion to the top-flight last the weekend.

Colts are only two points behind St.David's going into the final weekend of the season, but Lugo's men have a far superior goal difference.

Although St.David's' coaches, players and supporters enjoyed a few drinks after beating promotion rivals Robin Hood on Sunday, Lugo said the "real celebrations" would take place if, and when, they win the championship.

"We were delighted to beat Robin Hood to gain promotion but the job is not complete yet," he said. "We want the title as it will be our first ever championship, I believe.

"We had a few drinks after the game, but nothing major, that will happen when he have the title. That's when the real celebrations will start."

Lugo said promotion tasted all the more sweet considering they had suffered the misery of missing on the top-flight last season following a penalty shootout defeat against Devonshire Colts in the Premier Division play-offs.

"It was tough to take last year, losing to Colts," he said, "but we're there now and everyone has given 100 percent this season.

"We're confident we can stop up next season but I imagine we will have to bring in a few new players."

St.George's also made sure of their top-flight status by beating Young Men's Social Club on Sunday.

Colts' midfielder Detroy Smith said although the team would still be pushing for the title they were satisfied their promotion mission had been accomplished.

"Obviously we're delighted to have gained promotion this season," said Smith, who missed last weekend's match because of an injury.

"But if the title is still there to take we will take it.

"I think we can cope with the Premier Division, I think we have the skills."

Defeat against league leaders St.David's brought the shutters down on Robin Hood's promotion aspirations.

The First Division newcomers had led the standings at Christmas but points dropped in back-to-back defeats against Wolves and Prospect seriously dented their Premier Division push.

President Paul Scope said the club were already planning for next season and was confident coach Andrew Bascome would remain the helm.

"I have mixed emotions really," Scope said.

"To have won promotion would have been an unbelievable achievement in our first season but we probably lacked just that little bit of experience.

"It's disappointing as we were top at Christmas and those defeats against Wolves and Prospect hurt us.

"If we would have won those matches I think we would have been in a different frame of mind in our crucial games against St.David's and St.George's, which we lost.

"Andrew has done a terrific job and we have already started talking about next season.

"We're looking at setting up a youth system which Andrew would oversee and if we can bring in a few more experienced players I think that will see us over the hump next season.

"If you would have told me at the start of the season that we would have finished third or fourth I would have taken it."

n Southampton Rangers president Randy Raynor has praised his team for avoiding the drop to the First Division.

Rangers pulled off an impressive draw against North Village at Southampton Oval on Sunday.

The results leaves the Rams trailing Dandy Town by one point going into the final weekend of the season. Rangers are currently seventh in the table on 17 points.

"I'd like to congratulate everyone at the club for maintaining our top-flight status, said Raynor.

"It's been a good season and we will looking a strong finish with a win against Somerset Trojans at the weekend."
