Onions on course to retain title
MR Onions are closing in on their second successive Commercial championship after earning a draw against second-placed Robin Hood as BAA lost to North Village.
Onions are now eight points ahead of Hood with three games remaining while BAA are trailing after another defeat.
Hood were quicker out of the blocks, putting pressure on the Onions defence and looking to utilise the strength and aerial prowess of their two strikers.
But Onions gradually established a foothold in the game and began to play the more attractive football and on the stroke of half time an exquisite Nigel Forrester through ball presented Dave Martin with a shooting chance in the penalty area, when he was sent sprawling and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Onions' striker Eoghan O'Dwyer failed to capitalise though, his penalty going wide of the left post.
Hood took the lead ten minutes into the second half when an Onions attack broke down and the Hood countered swiftly down the left wing, before the ball broke for Kenny Dill whose strike from 18 yards clipped an Onions defender and flew into the net.
Sensing that their unbeaten league run was under threat, the Onions raised the urgency and controlled the majority of the remainder of the game. The equalizer came from the penalty spot, Forrester this time taking the spot kick after Simon Gregory had been fouled. The Onions pressed for a winner, but found the organized Hood defence well marshalled by Gary Ray and Simon Coombes difficult to break down. Onions best effort came from Niall Baillie whose firm drive whistled narrowly past the post.
BAA suffered their third loss in a row, going down 4-2 to North Village on Saturday. Village scored twice in the first half to leave the scores 0-2 at half time. BAA started the second half in determined fashion and got back on level terms with two goals in two minutes from Paul Colvin and Nick Rushton.
However Village recovered from this setback to score two further goals to win 4-2. Tilman Darrell grabbed a brace while Jamel Smith and Stephen Coddington also notched.
Key West Rangers beat PHC 4-2 with goals from Sergio Griffin, Kwame Tucker, Jamel Mills and Burton Cox. Alale Furbert and Craig Chrichlow were on target for PHC.
Five goals in each half saw the Dandy Town Roots run rampant over Prospect/Fire in a 10-2 win. Prospect started the game short and Roots showed no mercy as they bombarded their goal during the opening stages.
The second half was the same as the Roots threatened on almost every attack. Poor finishing by several Roots players kept the score line to what it was.
On target for the Roots were Joseph Weeks (three), Paul Cann (two), Shennen Gilbert (two), Hassan Durham (two), and Ian Frith (one). Randy Boyles and Justin Robinson scored for Prospect/Fire.
Vasco took the Commercial B Group One championship on Saturday in emphatic fashion, beating Somerset Bridge Peskies 5-0.
Leading one-nil at half time through a goal from Stephan Teleman, Vasco further extended their lead over a tiring Peskies outfit, with two goals from Ian Thompson and one each from Ross Nottingham and John Frias.
Meanwhile Hamilton Parish walloped St. David's 14-6. Irving Burgess grabbed six, Corey Hill got four, while Sean Dill, Shane Burgesss, Jamal Outerbridge and Fabio Coelho completed the rout. Dennis DeRoza and Greg Outerbridge got a pair each for St. David's while Jacal Minors and Jamel Franks also notched. Boulevard beat Valley 5-1.
In the Commercial B Group Two a Wali Salaam hat-trick helped Devonshire Lions beat Dockyard Falcons 3-1. Sean Woods was on target for Falcons.
MR Onions Real Men ended their campaign with a 5-0 defeat of Devonshire All-Stars.
Departing striker Steve Nowell fired on the turn to give Onions the lead and, not to be outdone, full-back Jason Roberts, who is also England-bound in the summer, chipped the keeper from distance to send Onions in 2-0 at the break.
All-Stars who had been short-handed in the first half had Onions pegged back for much of the game after the break but the visitors added three more from Mick Gilliland, Dirk Evelyn and a long-range curler from Matt Clarke.
Wolves beat Pest Control with ten minutes remaining when Casey Burgess lobbed Pest Control's keeper after a quick free-kick by Daniel Stovell.
