Paceman Tucker earns call-up after cup heroics
Belco Cup hero Kevin Tucker has been rewarded for his impressive early season form with a place in Bermuda's ICC Americas Championship squad.
The PHC fast bowler is one of three changes coach David Moore has made to the team that toured South Africa and Namibia in April.
Tucker replaces Stefan Kelly, who has university commitments in the UK, while there are also call-ups for young spinner Joshua Gilbert and Willow Cuts batsman Chris Douglas.
Gilbert replaces St George's bowler Ryan Steede, who could not get time off work, while Douglas comes in for opener Chris Foggo, who is injured after suffering a badly bruised hand in training.
"I'm a little shocked to be honest," said Tucker, who took four wickets on Sunday. "I feel good about that there, I've been training hard to get in. I think Sunday (Belco Cup final) pushed me to get in a little quicker, you know.
"I was involved with the team down in Namibia in 2005, but at the beginning of the year I decided to come back out and see what I could do, and it seems to have worked out in my favour. So I'm trying to stick with it.
"I'm enjoying being in the squad, I'm picking up a few new things. I'm looking forward to getting out there and playing for Bermuda, and seeing what I can do."
Moore watched Tucker twice last weekend, and those performances, as well as a continued commitment to training, convinced the Australian that the time was right to give Tucker a chance.
"He's one of a group of bowlers that Arnold and Andre (Manders) said were blokes to look at," said Moore. "So obviously when we practised a couple of times (I got that chance), and I saw him on Saturday and Sunday (in the Belco Cup), so he's certainly one of the better bowlers on the Island at this point, he's in good form and hopefully he can transfer that (to the next level).
"Obviously there's still an adjustment to jump from club cricket to international cricket that he has got to make as well."
While Tucker is a like-for-like replacement for Kelly, and Douglas is much the same for Foggo, Gilbert comes in as a second spinner, something the squad didn't have in April.
"We just thought that we needed another spinner in the squad to play, so that's why the boy Gilbert gets a run," said Moore. "So we went for the other spinner and I suppose the batting speaks for itself, they're probably the top six batsman that were available, although Shannon's (Rayner) a little bit out of form, but we'll work on that.
"Obviously I'm keeping a close eye on Janeiro (Tucker) after his innings the other day, and a couple of those guys over the weekend are in the mix as well, it's just a matter of whether they want to play for their country."
Players that missed out, or are in Moore's thoughts, may still get the chance to play for their country in the next couple of weeks. Following the 50-over tournament, there is a Twenty20 competition, and the Bermuda coach is waiting to see if he can make changes to his current 14-man squad for that.
If changes are allowed, then the likes of Janeiro Tucker, plus a couple of other players who have caught Moore's eye, are likely to be given a run out.
"We're just waiting for some clarification from the ICC on that one, if I'm allowed, we'll be making some changes," said Moore. "When David Hemp gets on the Island, if we get ICC approval for the Twenty20, I'll be discussing the possibility of making some changes with him, before the tournament."
Bermuda squad: David Hemp (Captain), Stephen Outerbridge (Vice Captain), Jekon Edness, Fiqre Crockwell, Malachi Jones, Justin Pitcher, Jordan DeSilva, Jim West, Shannon Rayner, Joshua Gilbert, Irving Romaine, Rodney Trott, Kevin Tucker, Christopher Douglas.
