Penny pounds IOD rivals
Bermuda's star IOD skipper, Eugene (Penny) Simmons, had no mercy for visiting sailors , completing a clean sweep of the class as the 2010 Bermuda International Race Week concluded on the Great Sound yesterday.
The local veteran, who has won the IOD World Championships on six occasions, competed in four Olympics and picked up a bronze medal the Pan-Am Games, was virtually unbeaten throughout the week.
He won the six-race 'A' series, the five-race 'B' series and the Vrengen Cold Cup, after taking first place honours in eight of the 11 races.
Yesterday Simmons added two more bullets to his tally, following the drop a fourth place when he T-boned a mark and had to take penalty turns.
He emerged with just four points in the five 'B' series races.
Second place went to Giles Peckham who finished with eight points.
Simmons and Peckham also placed one-two for the Vrengen Gold Cup Trophy, which combined racing for the two series.
Overall the Bermudian finished with 10 points and Peckham with 18 points.
Meanwhile, American Scott Snyder lifted the Gripper Trophy with victory in the J24 class.
He completed the regatta with 14 points, four less than long-time local J24 competitor Trevor Boyce on 18. Third place went to American Peter Rich with 19 points.
Last night no results had been released for the Etchells class following protests on the final day of racing.
Earlier this week, Bermuda's promising youngster Rockal Evans took victory in the Laser class, beating the likes of Malcolm Smith and Brett Wrigh, two of the Island's top sailors.
And in the J105 class, another Bermudian, Allan Williams, claimed top honours.
The prizegiving ceremony took place at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club last night.
