Petersen prepares Nisbett for event

Show jumper Patrick Nisbett is getting a huge helping hand from highly respected coach and world renowned course designer Olaf Petersen as he prepares for the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky next month.

The German has been Nisbett's coach and mentor for the last year and will be meeting up with him in Kentucky.

However, throughout this month he has organised a training camp in Mitwitz in Bavaria, building the same kind of course that the rider will face at the Worlds.

Nisbett recently announced that he would take his horse Cantaro to the States rather than the more experienced Antille 8 which has suffered a slight injury.

And it will be on Cantaro, with the the help of Petersen, that he will continue his preparation.

The white steed has never travelled by air before and now faces an 11-hour flight to Kentucky, although Nisbett believes he won't be adversel affected.

Training for Europe-based Nisbett and Cantaro will move into full swing as Petersen organises the build-up.

Besides helping him, the coach has been working with another Bermudian Heidi Mello who is also based in Europe.

After the Games he plans to visit Bermuda at the end of October when he will hold clinics.

His impressive resume shows that he has worked as a course designer for almost 30 years at the Worlds, Asian Games and Pan-Am Games.

As an official he has attended every Olympics since the Seoul Games in 1988.

Although Nisbett is the first Bermudian show jumper to take part in the World Equestrian Games, several other Bermudians have ridden at the same prestigious event, including Peter Gray, Mary Jane Tumbridge, Tim Collins, Gary Roque and Suzy Dunkley.
