PHC Zebras girls claim title with win over Stars
PHC Zebras girls side won the inaugural under-14 girls category on Saturday at the Kappa Alpha Psi Tournament, beating Dandy Town 1-0 in the final at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
In front of more than 800 spectators, the ladies from Warwick held off the likes of Bermuda High School for Girls (BHS), Young Stars, Somerset Cricket Club and Young Men's Social Club (YMSC) to lift the title.
Somerset Trojans successfully defended their under-seven division title by beating North Village 4-1, while new champions were crowned in the under nine and 11 divisions.
Hamilton Parish under-nines defeated North Village 2-0 on penalties after the two sides were deadlocked at one apiece at the end of regulation time, while the Rams saw off United FC 3-0 in the under 11's final.
Kappa member Jamal Hart was pleased with the weekend and impressed with the level of play.
"This year's tournament was by far our most successful tournament," said Hart.
"The hard work and pre- preparation truly paid off as all matches where played on time and we finished earlier than we normally do.
"We welcomed PRIDE on board for the first time and they where able to get their message across to the parents and the youth with the assistance of the ISL bus.
"Having Minister of Sport Glen Blakeney on hand to witness the finals and to make the trophy presentations to all the finalist was extra special and this said a lot as to what the Ministry thinks about the youth.
"For that we thank him again for being present.
"A number of people said that this tournament, which featured close to 800 participants over the course of the day, went off incident free, something that we are proud of."
Next up for the fraternity is their fourth All-Star match, which will take place next month at the NSC.
The event will feature the best of the East versus the best of the West and will comprise of players from all of the teams that participated in the tournament.
Hart also added that the fraternity would be looking at more ways in which to make the tournament even bigger by potentially bringing in a foreign side to compete.
"Throughout the day scouts where on hand at all the games played and we selected the outstanding players from each team.
"We shall also be recognising five former great players at the All-Star match who have helped to put Bermuda football on the map.
"Going forward it is the fraternity's vision to take the tournament to another level by inviting overseas youth teams to participate in the event.
"By doing this it would involve staging the tournament over two days with the youth of Bermuda benefiting from being exposed to other youth teams from overseas.
"Our core objective is on youth development and we feel that the international component would greatly benefit those clubs who do not get the opportunity to travel overseas to compete against other teams.
"So as you can see, big things are planned for this tournament and the youth."
