Pick of the league in basketball final

Smith's captain Steven Simons is confident that his side has what it takes to win the CellularOne Premier Basketball League (PBL) title tonight when they face off against St. George's International at CedarBridge gym and end the season unbeaten – the first team to do so in league's history.

The final will pit the two best sides this year in the Wildcats and International, with the latter losing last year's final to Hamilton Parish.

They had won the previous two titles and have been scoring points by the boast load in recent weeks.

With a match-up of size against experience, Simons feels his side know how to cope with the power of the St. George's big men and have their own stars capable of getting the job.

"We have had the same outlook for the entire season, which is one game at a time, try and win the game and when it's over it's over," said Simons.

"We will be putting the same effort in for this game as all the others we have played, we know what their strengths and weaknesses are so it will be a good game tonight.

"In my opinion they have the two best big men on the Island in Dean Jones and Charjuan Knights, but we defend pretty well as a team and it set up nice. We have size as well in Derek Hurdle and league MVP Ryan Rabain that will set up some good match-ups for the game.

"If we have to double team down to not let them get into a rhythm then we will do that.

"The international experience for those who have it has been extremely beneficial. Four of our starting five have been playing together for many years, while three were on the last Island Games team, our coach is Roderick Spencer who is very experienced so it is not only good for our team, but the league as a whole.

"We have some stability and continuity there, our chemistry is where it should be and we will look to emerge victorious."

Tip-off time for the final is 7.30 p.m.
