Plisco bundled out in first round

Defending Amateur Match Play champion Eric Plisko was unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament in the first round yesterday by an on-fire Bill Jenks.

Jenks, who was in superb form all day, dropped four birdies in a row as he stormed to a seven and six victory over last year's winner at Mid Ocean Club.

In Tuesday's medal round Jenks had struggled to a score of 84 compared to Plisco's 72.

The win set up a second round meeting with talented Bermuda youngster Damian Palanyandi, and will make Jenks one of the favourites to take the title this time around.

In contrast Palanyandi squeezed home one-up over visiting golfer Rod Forrest, and will have to be on top of his game today if he is to have any hope of beating Jenks.

Meanwhile, some of Bermuda's other youngsters had far more convincing wins, with Nick Jones seeing off Jose Luis Gerardo four and three, Camiko Smith handing long-time visitor Cy Kilgore a six and five thumping, and Jarryd Dillas dominating Charles George seven and six.

Jones and Smith will face each other in today's second round, while another local Nick Mansell, who beat Brent Wolgast two and one, faces qualifying medallist Jonathan Ingham, a three and two victor over Shannon Trott.

In the Ladies' Championships, qualifying medallist Katrin Burnie continued her good form with a six and five crushing of Maria Harris. Burnie faces Linda Down, who beat Elaine Stevens three and two in yesterday's opening matches.
