Police bank on heavy hitter Celestine
Cup holders Police and Devonshire will face off today at Devonshire Recreation Club to decide who will be crowned this year's Central Counties champions.
Police dethroned two-time defending champions Young Men Social Club in the first round and then tightened their grip on the trophy by defeating Western Stars in a high-scoring affair in the second round to set up today's mouthwatering clash with Open League champs Devonshire.
Premier Division outfit Police have played in spurts so far this season but can never be taken lightly on the day as their batting line-up boasts heavy hitters such as former St.George's Cup Match and Bermuda batsman James Celestine who can rip apart any attack when on song.
Celestine was one of the chief architects behind Police's 58-run victory over Social Club in the first round as he blasted 108 off just 68 deliveries and the cup holders will be hoping he can rediscover that punishing form against Devonshire in today's final.
Police will also rely heavily on off spinner Andy Cumberbatch and fast bowler Traddie Simpson to make inroads with the ball.
However, Police's task is a daunting one as Devonshire's team possesses match winners of their own in Somerset Cup Match hopeful Derrick Brangman and wicketkeeper/batsman Chris Foggo who has been consistent with the bat this season.
Foggo played an integral role in Devonshire's Open League success last May by featuring in an unbroken 65-run fifth-wicket stand with player/coach Ricky Brangman that took the game completely away from his former team St.David's at the National Sports Centre.
Also resting their title on the line today are Southampton Rangers who meet Willow Cuts in the second round of the Western Counties at Southampton Oval.
Rangers cruised to a comfortable 146-run win over PHC at the same venue last weekend and will be looking to continue in the same vein against a Cuts side missing key players Deunte Darrell and Kevon Fubler who are currently in Toronto with Bermuda's Under-19 squad.
Cuts have named one guest player in their squad in veteran Bailey's Bay batsman Cal (Patches) Dill.
There is one First Division 50-overs match on tap today with Western Stars hosting Flatts at St.John's Field while cup holders Cleveland will attempt to defend their Junior Eastern Counties crown against Flatts at Lords.
Meanwhile, two-time defending 50-overs champs Social Club will look to get themselves back in the thick of contention for league honours tomorow.
The Pembroke club host Rangers at Devonshire Rec knowing that a victory coupled by a Somerset win over St.David's at Lords would put their league title defence back on track and enhance their chances of a third straight title.
Social Club, however, will go into battle against Rangers without the services of player/coach Charlie Marshall who will tie the knot with fiance Lisa today at Christ Church in Devonshire.
According to recently released Bermuda Cricket Board standings, Social Club presently trail second-placed Rangers by three points with the Islanders a further two points ahead at the top of the pile.
Tomorrow's remaining Premier Division match ups see PHC hosting Bailey's Bay at White Hill Field and Cleveland taking on Police at Sea Breeze Oval.
In the First Division match of the day league, leaders Willow Cuts host unbeaten Devonshire at Somerset Cricket Club, third and fourth-placed Leg Trappers and Western Stars do battle at Police Field while fifth-placed St.George's host cellar dwellers Warwick at Wellington Oval.
