Pony racing steps up a gear

Harness racing kicks into high gear this weekend when the Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) hosts their annual 'Champion of Champions' race days at Vesey Street.

With a full slate of racing on the cards, the 12 fastest ponies of the year will compete against each other today for four spots in tomorrow's final, with a champion crowned on Sunday.

The favourite is undoubtedly Katrina Sims riding 'Speed Time', the new race track record holder, after breaking the previous standard during last week's racing at Vesey Street racetrack.

DHPC president Nick DeCosta, who has a pony in running for honours, is excited about the weekend, noting that the obvious favourite will be the new track record holder.

"This weekend we will be hosting our 'Champions of Champions' races and expect it to be very competitive," said DeCosta. "Speed Time broke the course record last week, so he will be the obvious favourite by a long shot, but we will see on the day. Anything can happen, so it should be exciting."
