Pre-race favourite put down after breaking leg
Champion of Champions pre-race favourite, It's Speed Time, was put down earlier this week after breaking its leg in the first heat of the finals on Sunday.
EJ Carreiro's Casmir Camotion outpaced the remaining ponies on their way to being crowned the 'Champion of Champions' after a weekend of heart pounding racing at the Vesey Street racetrack.
It's Speed Time is the current race track record holder after breaking the previous time a few weeks ago.
The incident happened in the first heat of the final with driver Catrina Sims at the helm of the record holder.
Camotion is now officially the fastest pony in Bermuda after claiming the coveted title.
Heading into the finals on Sunday, the champion squared off against Cherokee's Superman, GV Crystal Ball and It's Speed Time with these four being the fastest four ponies from Saturday, thus advancing on to race on Sunday.
With the title being decided over two races, Casmir Camotion won the first heat and placed third in the second to win the coveted title with a time of two minutes, 10 seconds, one fifth of a second over GV Crystal Ball (2:10.1) under the harness racing timing system.
Third place went to Cherokee's Superman with a time of 2:10.3.
President of the Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) Nick DeCosta was pleased with the weekend.
Although the pleas for a new venue to race will undoubtedly be bought to the fore again after the latest incident at the racetrack.
"It was a pretty fair weekend in terms of how the draw went for the Champion of Champions, everyone got a fair chance," said DeCosta.
"The finals didn't go as anticipated, with the favourite not being able to compete due to what had happened.
"I think he may have had a mis-step somewhere, but again on our tight track there is a lot of pressure being put on the ponies legs.
"And the track we are on isn't the most pony friendly, which is why we would like to change venues.
"But congratulations to the champion, he worked hard for his victory."
