Rangers crowned Counties champions

Southampton Rangers will be crowned Western Counties champions again today, after the champions and challengers Warwick agreed to cancel the match due to bad weather.

The clash, which was scheduled to be played at Southampton Oval today, has been called off due to Hurricane Bill.

The road to the title has been one of teamwork with different individuals stepping up to the plate at crucial stages to help Rangers over the hurdles they have faced.

It was Janeiro Tucker who led from the front in the first round with a stroke-filled 82 to push the side to a 146-run victory over PHC, with skipper Malachi Jones (42) and Stovell (47) contributing to the demolition.

Next up in the second round were Willow Cuts, who thought they might be able to the test the champions.

But it was Stovell (two for 34) and Dwayne Leverock (three for 13) who did the damage with Stovell also blasting a quick fire century on the way to a seven-wicket win.

In the third round, Rangers had a different look to their line-up against Somerset Bridge without Janeiro Tucker, Kwame Tucker and Dion Stovell, who all were missing from the showdown.

Yet it made no difference as the side romped to a comfortable 185-run victory thanks to a splendid 96 from Shannon Rayner as they thrashed Somerset Bridge.

Allen Richardson, first vice-president of Bermuda Cricket Board, is excited about the range of possibilities and potential outcomes for honours in both the promotion race in the First Division and the final spots for the BELCO Cup competition next year.

With this weekend's games being rained out, both Western Stars and Devonshire Rec. will receive one point for their match.

Additionally, after reviewing the reports from the Leg Trappers and St. Georges match that was not played due to the pitch being unprepared and following established precedent, St. George's have been awarded the points for that game.

Therefore any combination of Willow Cuts, Devonshire Rec and St. Georges could gain promotion on the last day of the season, which is August 30. In the Premier league, St. David's control their own destiny, and should they beat Police they will win the 50-over league.

The remaining positions are unclear particularly as there are five games that no scorecards have been received from the clubs.

Richardson said: "It is disappointing that we are still missing simple information from clubs with regard to Premier league matches.

"Last year the BCB was forced to award no points to all clubs that failed to submit an official scorecard," he said.

"I sincerely hope that we are not pressed into that situation again."
