Ravens on course for another perfect season

Ravens 'A' captain Joanne Bielby believes both her 'A' and 'B' teams can remain undefeated for some time if they stay focused on their play and not their respective unbeaten streaks this weekend when they take on Swifts and Swallows respectively.

Both sides have the longest streaks in their respective divisions with both teams going through the entire 2008/09 season undefeated.

The teams also made the finals of both 'A' and 'B' cups before going down, thus crushing their chances of a league and cup 'double'.

Despite that disappointment, the Bermuda defender says she is confident her charges have what it takes to get to the finish line again in both leagues.

"We faced some tough opposition last year and know that we will again this season," said Bielby. "The 'A' league was extremely close last season and I think it will be again this season.

"We know that the pressure is on us a bit to try and repeat our performance of last season and although it would be great to win again we want to have fun while doing it.

"I guess we are the team to beat if you base it on last season but I think that there are a few teams in each league that have the ability to win their respective league, so although some teams might be hunting us this season, I think we are also hunting as we know that each game will be a challenge."

The skipper has seen her 'A' side play three matches, winning two and drawing the other, with four teams within three points of the leaders, while the 'B' team are six for six, and sitting on top of the leaderboard in their division.

Although the league hasn't reached the half-way mark, the prospect of repeating last year's feat seems a real possibility.

Bielby, however, was quick to point out the many variables in the race for the league, including the addition of more teams and the loss of players for various reasons on her squad.

No matter the situation or circumstances that may arise throughout the season, the defender knows what must be done to be successful this time around.

"In order for our teams to be successful again this year it will require us to defend well and score goals as a team. This will come from attending training and working on drills and set-pieces and obviously working together as a team.

"We lost some of our players this season due to some of our juniors going off to school and others committing more time to their families. However, we haven't let this affect us

"We will use this to give other players a chance to play and improve, particularly the juniors as they are the future of the sport and can learn from playing with some of the more senior players.

"Overall I think we are capable of winning the league again this season in both leagues but we know we will face some tough challenges from the other teams but we look forward to the challenge and I'm sure that it will be an interesting season in both leagues . . . as they say anything can happen.

"Apart from winning we want to improve and learn, nurture our juniors and grow the sport on the Island and most importantly have fun. Sometimes the fun side is overlooked but most teams will agree that when you're on the pitch it can get competitive but we're all friends at the end of it all."
