Reds swept aside in second half goal blitz
Bermuda Reds 0
West Ham United 5
A second half goal blitz saw West Ham United sweep aside Bermuda Red in the Clyde Best Invitational Tournament at the National Sports Centre yesterday.
England Under-16 international Blair Turgott scored either side of half-time,
Strikers Elliott Lee bagged a brace, while partner Dylan Tombrides also found the net.
To their credit, Bermuda Red gave a good account of themselves during the first period, managing to restrict the East Londoners to a 1-0 lead at the interval.
But after the break West Ham's array of attacking talent proved too much for the Islanders who seemed to run out of steam when Turgott added a second soon after the re-start.
Technical director Derek Broadley admitted Bermuda had struggled to compete with West Ham's "intensity and football fitness".
"For two thirds of the game we showed we are capable and matched West Ham," said Broadley.
"But they train at higher intensity than us and that really showed in the second half.
"Our players have talent and technique but other factors come into play.
"Today we couldn't compete with West Ham's intensity or football fitness. They're both areas we're looking to improve upon in our national academy."
West Ham academy director, Tony Carr, said he was pleased with his team's response after losing their opening game of the tournament to French team Saint-Etienne, 2-0.
He also singled out Boulevard winger Quadir Maynard and Somerset Eagles defender Rakeem DeShields for special praise.
"I thought the number 11 (Maynard) was a handful at times and their number 4 (DeShields) did very well for them," Carr said.
Carr said the Hammers had looked tense until their second goal which "broke the back" of Bermuda.
"Having lost to Saint-Etienne it was important we put in a good display today and the five goals showed what we're capable of," he said.
"We have a lot of attacking potential and when we scored the second goal I knew it would break their (Bermuda's) backs.
"Until our second goal their was some tension to our play but the second goal allowed us to relax and really open up."
Saturday's games were both postponed because of the stormy weather and have been rescheduled for tonight at BAA Field.
Bermuda Red play Saint-Etienne at 5.30 p.m., and Bermuda Grey face West Ham at 7.30 p.m.
