Riddell's Bay pro Morris leads after sizzling 63
Riddell's Bay head professional, Brian Morris, came out swinging in the first round of the 57th annual Goodwill Tournament yesterday, carding a seven-under 63 at Belmont Hills.Morris, a former head pro at Belmont, is leading the pro stableford event by three shots over Alpine Country Club head pro Ed Kirby from Rhode Island.
Morris, the low professional in the Junior Division, recorded 26 stableford points while Kirby has 23, tied with local pro Scott Roy who is representing West Shore Country Club from Pennsylvania.
Morris said after his round: "I had a good day. For the past few weeks I have been hitting the ball very well but just messing up once or twice.
"Today it came together for me. I had seven birdies, one eagle and two bogeys – both three-putt greens. The conditions were ideal and the greens at Belmont were superb."
Last week Belmont Hills hosted the Gosling's Invitational.
The Goodwill is played over four courses – Port Royal, Belmont Hills, Tucker's Point Club and Mid Ocean Club.
Riddell's Bay will host the Pro-Pro competition on Wednesday.
The low professional in the Senior Division is Adam Brown, the Director of Golf at The National Golf Club from Canada.
Brown posted 21 points yesterday at Mid Ocean and one shot back in the Senior Division is Ted Griffin, representing the Woodland A team from Massachusetts. Griffin is on 21 points after playing at the redesigned Port Royal Golf Club.
For the first time in the history of the Goodwill tournament there is a Ladies Division with teams consisting of a female pro and three female amateurs.
Leading the charge after round one is the visiting pro out of Weekapaug Golf Club in Massachusetts, Susan Bond, who took a slim one-point lead over rival and local pro Judith Astwood-Outerbridge. Bond had nine points while the Bermudian came in with eight points.
The Junior Division gross team event sees Belmont Hills C team, composed of Craig Marsailles, Jimmy DeCouto, Harold Madeiros and Arthur (Nookie) Lindo tied with Riddell's Bay, composed of Morris, Allan E. Richardson, Terry Mullan and Norman Wilson. Both teams posted a nine-under 61 at Belmont Hills.
Jack Gale, Director of Golf at Cyprian Keys in Boston, and his team of Dan Falcucci, Forrest Black and Peter Boler are one shot back after an eight-under 62. They also played at Belmont yesterday.
Riddell's Bay also lead the Net Division in the Junior Division by one shot after a 14-under 56 at Belmont Hills while Belmont Hills C team along with the Country Club of Halifax – the only club among the leaders who did not play their first round at Belmont – are one back on 13-under par.
Bedrock CC from Boston, Massachusetts, composed of pro Joe Carr, Tim (Hack) McDonnell and Rob Tidgewell and the Country Club of Salt Lake, Utah, with Wayne Fisher, Neil Henderson, Dennis Runnoe and George Bradley share the lead at the top of the Senior Gross Division after both teams posted a five-under 65 yesterday at Belmont Hills.
One shot back is the team from Boston Bear Hill in Boston led by pro Ed Whalley, assisted by amateurs Cosmo Trapani, Bob Young and Jim Heaslip. They posted a 66.
In the Net Team Senior Division, the foursome from Bear Hill have a commanding seven-shot lead after an eight-under 52, taking full advantage of the calm conditions.
CC of Salt Lake and Sharon CC from Boston are at 11-under.
