Robinson hits form ahead of May 24
Southampton road runner Otis Robinson wrapped up his pre-May 24 Half-Marathon preparations with a 5K victory in Long Island and two personal bests in a track meeting in New York City.
And he is putting his improved racing form down to a training regime that has included a significant amount of cycling and swimming as well as running.
He faced humidity and temperatures in the high 80s last weekend when he ran in a 5K and 10K road race on consecutive days at the RXR Long Island Marathon Festival of Running.
In the 5K, Robinson led a field of 462 finishers across the line as he won in 18 minutes and nine seconds from his closest rival Anthony Senavite, who ran 18.36.
"There were record highs of 87F on both the Saturday and the Sunday – ideal preparation for the conditions on May 24," he said.
The 10K event attracted a larger field of 1,297 finishers and Robinson stuck with the lead pack, going through the first mile in 5.12.
He maintained his pace, although the absence of pace clocks in the last two miles meant he was unsure what time he was heading for until he crossed the finish line in 36.17 to claim fourth place.
The race was won by Angel Confesor in 33.59.
Robinson was back in action on Tuesday at a track meeting organised by the New York Road Runners where he set new personal bests. In the 1500 metres he ran 4.35 and then claimed another lifetime best only minutes later in the 800 metres event where he stopped the clock at 2.15. Although he finished near the back of the field in both the highly competitive track races, he was more than satisfied with his turn of speed.
"I feel like I'm totally recovered and feeling really confident for May 24," he said. "All the swimming and cycling I've been doing has paid off. It has given me the strength and speed I need. I'm glad the conditions were as hot as they were, in preparation for May 24. And I wanted to run around the pace I'd need to do to run 1.16 or 1.17 in the half-marathon, which is my target."
Robinson was a top ten finisher in the 2008 Bermuda Day Derby race.
