Samba soccer school set for Bermuda
A local branch of Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS) could be up and running as early as next spring, Somerset Trojans director of coaching and senior coach Dennis Brown has revealed.
The former Bermuda and Trojans defender said he hopes to see the new football academy – that boasts over one million kids enrolled in academies in 61 different countries across the globe – open its doors by early April.
"It is indeed a great pleasure and honour to be accepted as a BSS franchise. We will be having our official launch of the school in Bermuda very shortly," Brown said.
"We are looking forward to the launch and cannot wait to get involved with the school."
Although BSS Bermuda has yet to be formally launched, Brown and his fellow technical staff at Somerset Cricket Club (SCC) have already begun implementing some of the methods developed by BSS and International Confederation of Futebol de Salao (ICFDS) founder Simon Clifford which appear to be paying off.
Trojans' Under-15 team recently won their respective division with a perfect 10-0 record. Brown's youngsters banged in a remarkable 54 goals while conceding only five against.
"I am very proud of my players for displaying dedication, determination and discipline to improve individually and as a team," he said.
"I have seen remarkable progress from a team that finished fourth last year to being undefeated this year."
BSS was founded in 1996 by English coach and gym teacher Clifford who embarked on an expedition to Brazil to try and unlock some of the secrets to the country's success on the international football stage.
On his return to the UK, Simon brought with him Futebol de Salao – a five-a-side version of the game that is played with a smaller, heavier ball that virtually has no bounce – that was eventually incorporated into his coaching philosophy of placing heavy accent on ball skills and close control rather than traditional emphasis on fitness and physical strength.
Futebol de Salao is largely credited for shaping the careers of Brazilian legends such as Pele, Zico and Ronaldo to name a few.
"BSS will be the model for all football coaches and players in the immediate future and beyond," Brown declared. "I must give thanks to Simon Clifford (BSS founder) and the Brazilian Soccer Schools for allowing us to be a part of a unique family and training methods that I feel are second to none worldwide."
Brown successfully completed a ICFDS coaching course in the UK last summer and has plans to attend the next one to be held in July.
"I am looking forward to coming to the annual course to give more of my players and coaches insight and knowledge gained by attending such a prestigious event," he said. "I have just begun to brush the surface in the training methods with my Under-15 team."
With the league title under their belt, Brown's youngsters will now set their sights on adding the knockout cup to their collection.
