which starts at the Royal Lytham St. Anne's Golf Club in Blackpool, England, tomorrow.

Jones, who made an unsuccessful bid to qualify for the same competition two years ago, shot a four over par 76 in the qualifying round at the St. Anne's Old Links Golf Club.

"The course was right on the ocean and it was tough,'' said Jones. "I birdied the last two holes to get in. Twenty players qualified from my group.'' According to Jones, there were 147 golfers bidding to qualify for the prestigious tournament, including three other Bermudians, Lloyd James, Frankie Rabain and Jimmy Madeiros. Rabain just missed out being pencilled in as an alternate in case of a withdrawal, having shot a 78 and then being involved in a five man play-off.

James shot an 83 while Madeiros, playing at the Royal Lytham course, carded an 81.

Jones is pleased with the way he is hitting the ball at present and his first task will be to avoid the 36 hole cut of the 72 hole event. There are 120 players competing in the tournament.

"It's one of the largest field they've ever had for the British Senior Open,'' the local pro explained. "This is my first major tournament. I'm playing well up here. We came up here on the 17th (July) so we've had time to play a couple of rounds.

"I'm hoping to do well but golf is a game in which you don't know what's going to happen. I'll just try to hang in and do my best. I feel good about my game right now. I just missed qualifying for the US Senior Open two weeks ago.'' The British Senior Open ends on Sunday.
