Simons steps into unknown

Bermuda's darts team will try to make a splash at the upcoming World Darts Federation (WDF) World Cup when it begins tomorrow.

The 17th edition of the spectacle is set to take place at the Blake Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina with a total of 32 countries competing. Wales and The Netherlands are the defending Ladies and Men's champions respectively.

The Island will be sending a team of four men and two ladies to test their skills against the best in the world.

Team members include Steve Hickmott, Simon Curruthers, Vernom Daniels and Jon Almeida on the Men's side, while Liz Hickmott and Susan Simons will compete on the Ladies' side.

And Simons, who is venturing into unknown waters in her first World Cup, will have the unenviable task of taking on world number seven and England's number one Lisa Ashton.

Although she has the odds staked against her, Simons is anxious to see how well she does against the world's elite.

"This is my first time going," said Simons. "I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. I drew a really tough competitor for my Ladies' singles first round, Lisa Ashton.

"This will be my biggest event to date apart from the Caribbean Cup which is held every two years."

The side was selected based on points earned throughout the domestic season, with the top two ladies and top four men earning the right to represent Bermuda at this year's Finals.

Simons is confident of the skill that the side possess, although they don't all come from one local side, and that they will produce a good showing for the country.

"The team is selected from a new points system that was introduced to the league this year. The top two women and top four men qualified to go."

The finals start tomorrow with Men's double's action.
