Sims cards a five over during opening round in California

Pro Michael Sims has left himself a lot of do today in the second round of the Nationwide Tour's Fresh Express Classic at the 7,188-yard, par-71 TPC Stonebrae layout in California.

Sims has not had a good start to the year missing all his cuts except for the opening tournament at the New Zealand Open in January and it doesn't look good for him after yesterday's opening round where he carded a five over 76.

He started fairly well paring the first four holes but slipped up at the par four fifth hole where he scored a bogey. But he managed to steady the ship carding a birdie on the par five seventh hole only to score another bogey on the par five ninth to go out in one over 37.

It was the second nine that hurt the Bermudian as he double bogeyed the par three 12th hole and then made matters worse when he bogeyed the par four 13th. From there he made pars on 14, 15, 16, and 17 but bogeyed the par four 18th for a round of 76 on the par 71 course.

Sims has failed to make the cut at three tournaments in Australia, Panama and Colombia before travelling to California this week.

Leading the tournament at press time last night was Frank Lickliter II who was sitting on six under par (65).
