Sims slips after nightmare start

Michael Sims endured a nightmare start and finished only slightly better as he dropped 40 places down the leaderboard in yesterday's second round of the Nationwide Tour's BMW Charity Pro-Am being played over three courses in Greer, South Carolina.

Having started the day at three-under-par after posting a 69 on Thursday at the Carolina Country Club, the monster 7,435-yard, par-72 Bright's Creek course proved less welcoming.

Sims began with a double-bogey seven at the par-five first hole, and although he clawed his way back with birdies at the eighth, 11th and 13th, he dropped another shot at the par-four 18th to finish on even-par 72.

That left the 30-year-old Bermudian tied for 83rd at three-under 141 but with no 36-hole cut, he'll be hoping to bounce back when he plays his third round at the par-71 Thornblade course today and give himself a chance to increase his year's money-earnings in tomorrow's final round.

He went into this week's event placed 31st on the moneylist with $35,540 after making the cut in all four tournaments in which he's played this year.

Featured on the Golf Channel today and tomorrow the event, in which pros are coupled with amateur partners, is offering $700,000 in prizemoney with $126,000 going to the winner.

Current leader is American Jeff Gove who is at 13-under-par after recording consecutive rounds of 65.

n Bermuda's ladies' golf team maintained their eight-shot gross division lead in the second round of the annual Kitty Michael tournament being played on two courses at the Doral Resort and Spa in Florida.

With three scores counting from each team, Kathy Lloyd-Hines carded 86, Tracy Nash 86 and Katyna Rabain 86 on the 5,392-yard Monster Blue course as the Island team took their 36-hole total to 509.

Southeast Florida remained in second place on 517 with Summerlea and Lyford Cay are tied for third on 541.

In the net division, Bermuda (451) dropped from second to third, seven shots behind leaders Lyford Cay (444) and two adrift of second-placed Southeast Florida (449).

Tracy Nash and Katyna Rabain recorded Bermuda's best net scores of 77 while Lloyd-Hines fired a net 79.

The tournament, in which Bermuda has participated since the inaugural competition 31 years ago, has attracted 10 teams this year – Bermuda, Baltusrol, Guadaloupe, Jamaica, Lyford Cay, Ocean Reef, Puerto Rico, Southeast Florida, Southwest Florida and Summerlea.
