Dwayne Leverock has ended his international retirement and is part of the Bermuda training squad for the UAE series next month.

The Southampton Rangers skipper was a surprise inclusion in the 25-man group that head coach David Moore said he wanted to form the basis of the team for the next year and more.

Also included are the likes of OJ Pitcher and David Lovell, while Ryan Steede and Stefan Kelly are also back after missing the recent ICC Americas Championship.

"He's (Leverock) made himself available," said Moore. "He approached me about being involved, he told me that he was interested in being part of the programme and that's where we are at, at the moment.

"We'll just see how he goes, how he trains, and so on, but it's good to have him back in the squad.

"But the competition is quite stiff (from the likes of Rodney Trott and Joshua Gilbert)."

There is also a healthy dose of young blood in the initial training squad, with St George's wicketkeeper Christian Burgess winning his first call-up. While Terryn Fray, Duente Darrell, Kevon Fabler, and Kamau Leverock are also included.

Out are Justin Pitcher, Regino Smith and Kyle Hodsoll, who are all injured, while Willow Cuts duo Malachi Jones and Chris Douglas are serving bans for their part in the incident during the ICC Americas Championship.

Moore though was keen to stress that the door wasn't closed to any player, as long as they were willing to meet the standards he demands.

"The bottom line was, I have been going around watching club games, watching our blokes practice, and that sort of stuff, and the additions have come from good performances from club cricket.

"And they have also all had a stated desire to play for their country, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

"We've got a pretty big year coming up, so we are in a situation where we need to be moving forward and these guys are the initial squad that are going to take us forward.

"That doesn't mean the door is closed for anyone else.

"I don't think there are many blokes outside the 25 that could have been in the squad, but I'm not 100 percent sure.

"I'm always looking at performances in club cricket, and there are guys that have currently made themselves unavailable that the door is still always open to.

"And there are guys who have work commitments, such as Azim Pitcher, who has a very heavy work commitment.

"I'm always looking at people like him, there's Delyone Borden, he's got other things he has to work out."

The 25-man training squad will be trimmed down to 15 players for the four-day Intercontinental Shield match against UAE which starts on July 5.

However, other players will also be involved in the two one-day games, and the Twenty20 encounter that make up the rest of the tour.

OJ Pitcher for example can't play in the four-day game, because he has college commitments in the US, while Irving Romaine will miss the one-day games because of family commitments.

What is certain however is that Bermuda have a healthy competition for places in most positions, and none more so in the bowling department.

Kelly is likely to be involved, despite the impressive performances of bowling trio Jordan DeSilva, Kevin Tucker and Jim West during the Americas this month.

"Stefan performed very well for us in Namibia and I would really like to use him if we can," said Moore.

"And of course we are in a situation where he is a quality player and there is every chance he can be part of the programme. So I am keen to have him on board for sure."

In contrast Leverock is unlikely to waltz straight back into the team considering the performances of Trott and Gilbert.

Fray is expected to start pushing for a place at the top of the order, with Fiqre Crockwell looking vulnerable, while Shannon Rayner continues to press for a regular spot in the middle order.
