Social Club and Devonshire cement place in semis

Young Men's Social Club and Devonshire Recreation Club have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2009 Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) Open League and it now remains to be seen which two sides will join them.

Two-time defending Premier Division limited-overs and Central Counties champs Social Club beat Police and Western Stars in their two Group C matches to finish on top of the pile with 30 points.

Social Club's Central Counties rivals, Devonshire, also took the shortest route to the final four with successive wins against Willow Cuts and Cleveland to clinch Group D with 26 points.

St. George's Cricket Club, who have completed their group matches, currently top Group B with 36 points followed by Flatts in second with 13 points and Bailey's Bay in third with seven points.

Flatts will now take on Bay in a crucial make-up match at Sea Breeze Oval this Sunday that could determine which side advances from Group B.

The BCB have yet to confirm whether or not last Saturday's Group B match between Bay and Somerset Bridge is to be rescheduled.

That match, of vital importance to Bay's hopes of reaching the semi-finals, failed to get underway at White Hill Field after no umpires turned up.

In Group A, current leaders PHC and St.David's are locked in a two-horse race for the sole semi-final spot that will be decided at White Hill Field on Saturday when the two sides clash in a make-up match originally scheduled for May 3.

PHC presently have 24 points – the same as second-placed Southampton Rangers who have already completed their quota of matches – compared to the Islanders' 17.

The maximum amount of points PHC can amass is 40 while the most St. David's can gather from their three group matches is 33.

The Open League semi-finals are to be held on May 24 at venues yet to be determined with the final set aside for May 30 at the National Sports Centre.

Meanwhile the BCB have confirmed that St. George's were awarded maximum points (16) after Flatts failed to field a squad at Wellington Oval last Saturday.

Local cricket's governing body have also confirmed that Stars and Police will face off on May 23 in a make-up match to determine the eventual second-place Group C finisher.

n Ankoma Cannonier and not Angelo Cannonier, as was reported yesterday, took a superb one-handed catch to dismiss Southampton Rangers player/coach Janeiro Tucker during last Sunday's Group A match involving Rangers and St.David's at Southampton Oval.
