Somerset begin the search for Cup Match team
Somerset Cricket Club will stage their first Cup Match trial match in the West End on Monday when they take on a Western Counties Select in a 50 overs contest for the Neville Roberts/Mackie Simmons Memorial Trophy.
All rounder Jacobi Robinson will lead a youthful Somerset while veteran Reggie Tucker jr will captain the Western Counties Select.
This year will see Somerset host the annual mid-summer classic with firm intentions of reclaiming the trophy they lost three-years ago in St.George's during a heated battle which saw tempers flare at Wellington Oval.
However, like rivals St.George's, Somerset's Cup Match plans could be affected by August's Twenty20 World Cup qualifiers in Ireland which will force some of the Island's top cricketers to ultimately decide between representing their country or the Cup Match club of their choice.
"We have already met with all the potential players to inform them what our programme is all about, when training officially starts as well as the trial dates," Somerset chairman of selectors Mark Trott stated.
As a former national team cricketer, Trott is a subscriber to the philosophy that country should always take priority over club or in this particular case Cup Match.
"Our players are well aware of our stance that Somerset Cricket Club have always supported the national programme," he added. "Cup Match is obviously our bread and butter and the biggest community event. But at the same token it's a decision the players will have to make and we made it clear to them that we will not begrudge anyone if they decide to represent Bermuda, which is an honour."
As it presently stands, top all-rounders Janeiro Tucker, Malachi Jones and Dion Stovell have already made themselves unavailable for national team selection. However, wicketkeeper Jekon Edness and batsmen Stephen Outerbridge and Azeem Pitcher may opt to travel to Ireland instead with Gus Logie's team, leaving Trott and his fellow committee members with huge voids to fill.
Two other Somerset Cup Match players, Dean Stephens and Derek Brangman, have been inactive so far this season for club side Devonshire.
Bermuda skipper Irving Romaine has been invited to train with Somerset this year but is almost certain to be ruled out for selection through national team commitments.
Meanwhile, domestic league action resumes this weekend starting today at Southampton Oval where Belco Cup finalists Southampton Rangers and St.George's Cricket Club do battle in what should be another exciting contest between the two rivals.
Rangers pipped the East Enders by two runs en route to raising a record fourth straight Belco Cup title last weekend but will be without inspirational player/coach Janeiro Tucker who has other commitments today.
Tucker's cousin, Kwame, is expected to make a return to the squad along with batsman Rohaan Simons.
Today's other Premier match ups see St.David's host Somerset at Lords, Social Club take on Landlords Devonshire at Devonshire Rec. while Police will look to build upon their recent shock win over the Islanders when they host unbeaten Cleveland County at Police Field.
Bailey's Bay will host PHC in today's sole First Division encounter at Sea Breeze Oval.
Premier Division action then continues tomorrow with Southampton Rangers and St.George's meeting at Southampton Oval for the third time in seven days, Police taking on St.David's at Police Field and Social Club doing battle with Somerset at Devonshire Rec.
Elsewhere, Flatts take on Warwick at Lords in tomorrow's only First Division match.
