Dear Sir,
One sportsman I have always admired is former Bermuda football and cricket international Winston (Coe) Trott.
As a player ,Trott always kept himself in top physical condition, gave 100 percent on the field and represented his country with pride and dignity. Therefore when I learned he was made a national team cricket selector I was pleased.
Already he can be seen at various matches taking a close look at what is going on, thus ensuring he can judge accurately who the best and most in-form players are. This professional approach to the job of being a selector has often been lacking in the past. Individuals have no problem accepting the position but don't really do it justice in that they do not attend games to watch our cricketers week in and week out.
I recognise that the position is not a paid one but quite frankly if one accepts it even on a voluntary basis they really need to do the job properly.
The BCB have shown they are determined to take our game to another level, having recently implemented summer contracts to some of our best young cricketers. This semi-professional mode must extend to all facets of our game, even our selectors.
If it becomes necessary to compensate them for their time, then really the Board have little choice although I am sure there are a number of worthy individuals out there who would be glad to do it for free.
I would encourage all of our national selectors, be it at senior or any other level, to make some time each Sunday to watch our cricketers in action by so doing we will leave no stone unturned in the search for our best national team.
